in years past we would've just been considered a "melancholic" personality type and allowed to brood -- now it's been pathologized.

Taking questions on my date with a man-shrew

Date: June 17th, 2012 1:33 AM

Author: ,.,...,..,.,.,:,.:,.,.,:.:,..,..,:,.,.:.:.,:.::,

I'm a shrew femposter; he's a 33 yo man-shrew in finance.

We went for dinner at a psuedo-hip restaurant.I did little, if any self-censoring (as usual) and basically negged him the entire night, and refused to even give him a kiss. He already texted back saying he had a wonderful time and would like to go out again. It seems negging and seemingly bs "PUA" behavior also works on men. LOL.

there is less of a stigma today around severe mental illness suicide, etc.

arguably, however, there is more social stigma around common/moderate mental illnesses that in the past would've probably just been described as "melancholy" or "mania". every introverted beta dork on xoxo now has "social anxiety disorder".

melancholic personality wasn't seen to be a disorder... I'm not sure it arose from psychology/science, it pre-dated that. Back in 1500s/1600s Elizabethan era.. you had a 'melancholic' personality type. Shakespeare wrote about this shit, it was considered a normal personality type.

meh. these things are kind of on a gradient scale -- because we have a better understanding of the role of neurotransmitters, today we assume these are more valid diagnoses. that may be, but it's unclear precisely how much more valid -- we may think it bad psudo-science 100 years hence, for example.

sure. but, science isn't even fully clear yet on how the neurotransmitter theory works, precisely, nor how its potentiated, etc. i agree they have more validity because there is at minimum some science behind them, but at the same time, we are now also discoveing the role of things like intestinal flora or systemic inflammation in mood. today's science/diagnoes may seem immature and incomplete, at best in 20 yrs

i'm not sure how you can say with a straight face that worrying about your health is the most fucktarted thing on earth. this is the whole basis of prevention and/or treatment -- awareness and action re:illness. caring and thinking about the mechanics of health is also essentially medical science. don't even try to mock this -- saying that caring about your health is "the most unintellectual and fucktarded thing" is a ridiculous statement which belies some serious desperation to offend or general immaturity.

I don't really think that any science can be that intellectually interesting. there's a fact of the matter - either the chemicals work this way or they work that, either the amino acids in your genes cause proteins to be built that make you depressed for life or they don't, either the crap in your intestines plays a role or it doesn't. it's hard, of course, to find out what these facts are, so people go to a lot of trouble to find them out and it takes a pretty smart person to make a meaningful contribution to the field of study, but ultimately you're just arguing about some very simple brute facts about the physical world. I can't take that a tenth as seriously as philosophy or literary criticism or even fucking legal theory.

it's not just an aesthetic preference, I honestly believe malls are more meaningful. curing cancer or what have you is obviously very useful, but it's not an intellectual achievement or something I want to read about, any more than, I don't know, the invention of the lcd screen.

you're implying that artifacts of human behavior --thmselves largely underpinned by medical science -- are more meaningful than medical science. this is an aesthetic statement - not even a philosophical one (except at the basest, most rudimentary level).

I really don't think medical science underpins the mall. that would be quite the feat, if you could build out from medical science to mall culture. but yeah, artifacts of human behavior are way more meaningful than medical science, that's why most educated people are more interested in Plato's Symposium than some rat's genome

how on earth can you spout meaningless, unsubstantiated platitudes like "artifacts of human behavior are way more meaningful than medical science, that's why most educated people are more interested in Plato's Symposium than some rat's genome" and expect to be taken seriously?

I don't expect anything. but I don't see how excavating a bunch of facts about organic chemistry is intellectual at all. we can all see that, say, fixing the date at which the dinosaurs became extinct isn't a very intellectual matter, that it isn't any more profound than figuring out the date of some historical figure's birth - just a lot harder, and with more implications for when you date other events. what's so intellectual about matching phenotypes with genotypes? brain states with moods? knowing the answers to these questions may help a lot of people, but finding out where some treasure is buried can be really useful too, that doesn't make its location a question of intellectual interest.

Human progress can be categorized in essentially 2 camps:

1)Material facts which enable us to manipulate our world. This is much of science, mathematics, etc., and has been essential to the development of human society and the conditions necessary for

2)Philosophical or abstract inquiry, which would be largely sterile/useless were it not for 1.

Furthermore, these two camps often intersect and inform one another, and to argue that material facts about the world offer little of intellectual value is to disregard the whole history of human development.

why progress? why should inquiry be useful at all? I tend to think intellectual value is inversely proportional to usefulness. valueless ideas, in a particular discipline, are almost always more useful to people than valueful ones; very few people have any use for serious theology, metaethics, poliical theory, linguistics, but they do have use for junk political theory, junk theology, etc.

"we are now also discovering [sic] the role of things like intestinal flora or systemic inflammation in mood"

link? I just googled this and although things like nutrition & fitness changes can certainly help, i don't think it will cure depression. I used to work out 5-7x/week in UG/LS, have 2 probiotic yogurt cups/day, drink lots of water, had a healthy diet with protein, fiber, etc. And was still depressed. It's a variable but not a really important one. I think whether you have really fulfilling relationships with your friends/family/community matters most but if u have a permanent 'melancholic' personality (I've always been a bit reserved since i was a kid..) nothing will really change that. Maybe u just have to accept it after a certain point.

. these things are kind of on a gradient scale -- because we have a better understanding of the role of neurotransmitters, today we assume these are more valid diagnoses. that may be, but it's unclear precisely how much more valid -- we may think it bad psudo-science 100 years hence, for example.

science isn't even fully clear yet on how the neurotransmitter theory works, precisely, nor how its potentiated, etc. i agree they have more validity because there is at minimum some science behind them, but at the same time, we are now also discoveing the role of things like intestinal flora or systemic inflammation in mood. today's science/diagnoes may seem immature and incomplete, at best in 20 yrs

on how to find fellow "INTP's"

the difficulty is that these folks are introverted, so you're unlikely to meet them. i'd just say be yourself -- intps like to talk about dry subjects and gravitate toward similar folks -- they'll find you, i guess.

INTPs are one of the rarest types, though, so unless you work in an INTP_heavy field, you're unlikely to encounter many of them

no. and no, I never was nice. I might have been disingenuous, but disingenuous isn't nice. I don't dislike you much, but you would be a whole lot more tolerable if you were more aware of your limitations and didn't try so hard. and your attempts to be condescending, or write condescendingly, are just as aspie as everything else about you, and as hamhanded as the rest of your writing.

'm not sure how you can say with a straight face that worrying about your health is the most fucktarted thing on earth. this is the whole basis of prevention and/or treatment -- awareness and action re:illness. caring and thinking about the mechanics of health is also essentially medical science. don't even try to mock this -- saying that caring about your health is "the most unintellectual and fucktarded thing" is a ridiculous statement which belies some serious desperation to offend or general immaturity.
