was looking at our symplicity trying to help some rising 3L out with who to target, and found that there were only 12. moreover, only 4 of those 12 are actually 2012 grads (though a few 2012 grads have 2013-14 clerkships lined up)

class of 640 or so, usually pops out a scotus clerk a year. UVA did 17 with a class half the size, so it's like gulc is about a quarter as good at producing coa clerks this year per capita

it's just a coa clerkship. there are, what, about 600 of these positions

you have six hundred warm bodies. on a good day, only 30 or so should qualify on the basis of grades (given the quality and volume of applicants all COA judges are getting ITE). if half of the people who are qualified go for it that's 15 people and 10-12 getting offers out of that isn't bad. the days when top 20% at GULC should put one "in the running" provided they had some other things going for them on their resume are long gone.

well, top editors on the Law Journal who are below top 5% but in the top ten percent probably get looks too, and I'm not sure that just half goes for it. I'm not complaining, I'm one of the 12, but the placement does seem pretty weak.

that's adding maybe 2-3 people (EIC, articles, maybe one other? different journals have different positions and i don't know how yours works). anyway, at all schools there are plenty of people with high grades who don't apply to clerkships for any number of reasons. you're placing 3% into clerkships from a school that is putting what % in biglaw these days? 40%? i don't see why you think it would be that much higher. but congrats on yours. as long as you don't have a real asshole of a judge, it should be a great experience.

2%, but point taken. I don't think the judge is an asshole, just sort of chilly and aspie. I got a handwritten rejection letter that was 50 times warmer than the official offer letter I got from the judge I'm working for

oh and also, a ton of those 12 aren't '12 grads; the sykes clerk, for example, spent 3 years working at cravath/endearing himself to sykes by working for the fed soc politburo

haha they can't all be winners. even if he's not the warmest guy, as long as he isn't a screamer it'll be a fun experience and a great chance to improve your writing and learn how to work under deadlines. my advice is the same for pretty much everything, but bust your ass the first 2-3 weeks and make sure whatever work product you turn in (may vary based on your judge and his cases) is fucking excellent. whatever first impression you make while working with someone is hard to un-do.

actually, 12. so if you rate this out, at UVA's class size they'd just have 6, compared to the 17 UVA actually had
