partners love moving ex parte whenever they have the chance. you usually have little notice, have to work overnight, scramble to get declarations, etc.

Discovery motions are cut and paste. Please don't tell me you routinely have to stay up until 2am on this shit because that only happens in shitlaw firms where the motion database is shit.

Yeah, there are instances, but in general you have a scheduling order around which to plan your life. Deal lawyers come in on Tuesday and work 24/7 for three days, then no work for a week.

Yeah, but if you're at a chill place that's being in by 10, watching videos, online shopping, long lunch and then out at 330.

I know dood, I talk to my colleagues in NYC and it's like, "Why would you do that?" I make twice what you do in terms of COL and our expectations are 2000, not 2400.

I just do not get it.

Deal lawyers have it worse, but youre vastly oversimplifying things by relying on the existence of a scheduling order in lit.

Yeah, oversimplifying, but I can at least know when I WILL be busy. I know when NOT to take time off.

Something new can come up at any moment on both sides.

You know when not to take off. But you must also plan as if you will not have any time off.

I don't follow. I plan vacations for after the end of discovery, after SJ motions are filed, after complaint is filed, etc. If it gets ruined, it gets ruined, but oh well.

Also, the weekends are ruined less often. Very few Sunday emergencies.

This isn't my experience. Stuff comes up at the last minute sometimes in lit, sure, but having a vacation ruined is the exception rather than the rule.
