It turns on but doesn't connect to a computer. What does that mean? How did he try to connect?

If the OS is fucked up it won't work in any computer as the primary drive.

Here is a quick solution:

1. Take HD out of computer

2. Put in sealed/ziplock bag.

3. Place in freezer for 30-40 min.

4. Take out and plug into computer with NEW HD also connected.

5. Begin transferring files until HD gives out again.

Rinse/Freeze/Repeat

How does this work? The Wikipedia description made no sense. All I know is that when one of the drives in my RAID array failed, I turned off the computer, swapped the bad drive with a new one, and turned it back on. Good as new.

RAID-Z means you are using the ZFS file system, which has a number of nerdy advantages.

One big difference is that RAID-Z arrays are more stable than RAID5 arrays, which can get a "write hole" and really get fucked up.

How do they compare to RAID-0, though? That's what I generally use, since I've never had so much irreplaceable data that I need more than a terabyte or so.

RAID0 isn't really RAID. It doesn't provide any redundancy, it just adds capacity and speed at the expense of reliability.

You are probably referring to a RAID1 if you had a failure and were able to recover.

I have a RAID-Z1 set up. 4x1TB disks providing 3TB of storage and the ability to lose 1 disk.

ZFS has a lot of neat little tricks, like snapshots (Time Machine-like feature) and deduplication (if you were to store 100 copies of a 1GB file it would only take up 1GB, not 100GB)
