both in total amount and as a percentage of GDP.
Why do you bemoan the amount of money that is spent on public education? Is it because liberalism is a mental disorder?

Both liberal do-gooders and conservative culture warriors look to public education to achieve public goods. In the 1950s and 1960s, a national focus on the problem of racial segregation helped steer education policy away from questions of excellence to questions of equity and access. In the 1970s, activists bent on such diverse causes as environmentalism, humanism, spiritualism, and even socialism began to target the school curriculum. They produced all sorts of programs, handbooks, textbooks, and other materials, and used political influence to have these adopted as part of the school day in many jurisdictions. Meanwhile, America’s developmental psychologists and early childhood experts, deep in their environmentalist (in the sense of non- genetic) phase, got the attention of educators and political leaders. They argued that formal education should be supplemented with special counseling and self-esteem programs, that formal education should be extended into the preschool years, and that the federal government should be involved in funding these early- intervention and compensatory education programs.

To be clear: the salary issue is COMPLETELY MISSING THE POINT.
Without a massive shift in the way most parents engage with their children's academics, we won't see much improvement. Academic success begins at home with the right mindset and supervision.
Note that Asian and Indian families are somehow able to massively out perform other cultures academically in this country.

That is the fundamental problem with education: it is public.
You would not have a long-running inequity amongst teachers in the private sector. Those schools that hired whites over equally competent blacks at double the wage would go broke in the free-market fairly quickly, especially as social norms change.
Moreover, the entire second bit of this further proves the issue with public systems. In whose interest is it to even bother keeping track of the quality of the teachers, the attrition rate of good math and science teachers, and then also trying to find a "competitive market-rate" for them? Who is going to do that out of the kindness of their heart? You get rid of the profit-incentive and all you are left with is a handful of people who actually want to do good work for the sake of it. The rest of the administrators are going to punch out without giving a shit about all that stuff.

Thats not privatization in the same sense, retard.
There are shitloads of reasons why the current prison system (both "privatized" and public) are actually still public, but let us focus on the major difference between public v. private, INCENTIVES:
Who pays for prisoners to be kept?
Do you understand how you have the exact same problem as before with incentives since the gov't is paying for it? Look, it does not matter if the gov't goes out and hires 100 security guards, purchases a building and houses criminals inside or if it outsources the purchase and operations to a 3rd party. PAYMENT is still coming from the gov't. The lack of a connection between the payer and who the services are meant to benefit is the problem in public schools and is just as much a problem in "privatized" prisons. If you weren't such an idiot you would have realized this within a moments thought.
Why do you insist on opening your mouth in these matters? How many times do I have to utterly demolish you?

One of my less-than-academically-gifted cousins was in HOTS in elementary school. I admit that the specific program targeted can have questionable results.
However, they explicitly reject exposure to "critical thinking skills" that might "challeng[e] the student’s fixed beliefs" because they fear it will "undermin[e] parental authority" to teach kids that Satan planted dinosaur bones in the earth to test man's faith in the Bible.
Our country is TTT because the GOP is TTT.

libs think you can fix everything with a little gubmint money to grease it up. that's why in SPS districts in NJ where the cost of education is approaching $30k per pupil they are doing so well.

So you're saying we should spend less money on public education? How would that help America?
You utterly fail to realize that Americans hate education, unlike many of the other countries that succeed in education. You have politicians trashing "elites" and those who attend college. You have the GOP in Texas issuing an education policy that literally opposes the teaching of critical thinking skills because it might cause children not to blindly obey their parents. You have idiots who are pushing for the teaching of "intelligent design" in American science classes. More dumbasses are demanding that public money should be issued as vouchers that can be spent in predominantly religious private institutions.
Most of the morons causing most of the problems with education are conservatards. Then they look at the problems with the system, which they caused, and say that we should just stop funding public education. So what's their alternative?

As opposed to our tax dollars going to teachers unions?
And as long as those madrassas and yeshivas are not promoting violence and destruction and a disrespect for the rule of law, then sure, why not. That's the parents' prerogative. If a Catholic school or any school has instances of nonconsensual sex abuse, the perpetrator should be prosecuted, and the school investigated for the adequacy of supervision and hiring policies, as an additional disincentive or fail-safe to parents likely pulling their kids out of that school once news surfaces.

Let me repeat myself. I did not say we should pay more for education. I only stated my opposition to tearing down the system we have in place. Schools have the benefit of forcing us to sit down with the drooling retards and learning to how do with them. Vouchers will lead to Jews going to yeshivas, Muslims to madrassas, Asians to SAT prep schools, gays to Catholic school, and blacks in public school. Then all of these assholes will graduate after 12 years of education, go to college (well, not the blacks), and then realize that they do not share a common base of American experience such as football, pledging allegiance to the flag, and trying to fuck hot cheerleaders.

On page 12, under "Knowledge-based Education":
“We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority.”

I don't know, but school vouchers for all are a bunch of bullshit.
Private School costs are following higher education costs. My private High School costs twice as much now than it did when I was there, and I graduated less than a decade ago.
You know how much it would cost if everyone got a school voucher? Exactly what it costs now PLUS whatever a school voucher covers. It wouldn't draw in any new students.
Vouchers are fucking scam. You're just going to get a bunch of "private" schools that spring up to make money off of them and they're going to suck balls. It's also just nonsense to get the gov to subsidize fundie schools.

Vouchers are, by and large, not the answer.
Charters absolutely are. Watch Waiting for Superman.
It is physically impossible at a state-run school to:
- create any coherent sense of law and order, culture of respect (both for authority and peers), intellectual curiosity, and hard work. Charter schools largely succeed because they can have longer school days, uniforms, stricter behavioral rules, etc. David Brooks makes good points here in The Social Animal.
- fire a teacher. There was literally a case in NY recently in which a lesbo nigger teacher had had sexual harassment complaints filed against her multiple times. The school COULD NOT fire her because she had unionized tenure. Teacher tenure is the most buttfucking retarded system I can possibly imagine. It's bad enough at the higher education level, but TENURE for high school teachers, simply based on the number of years you've managed to pass a handful of niggers through your recycled lesson plan? Holy fucking shit. They need to run it like a goddamn business. Hire the best people, pay them well, fire them if they don't perform, hire someone better. It's not that fucking complicated.
- be flexible in curricula and technology. It would absolutely be better to literally sell every. single. textbook. in the ENTIRE public education system, take the money, buy a 1st or 2nd gen used iPad for every student, and assign Khan Academy for homework every night. Only a charter school can make decisions like this fast enough to keep pace with the modern world.
tl;dr our public education system was created in the industrial age to mirror an assembly line. 2012 is not the fucking industrial age. Keep the little fuckers in line, but create a dynamic environment that allows them to master the basics at their own pace while exploring their personal interests.

Education is a public good. If you disagree with this, you know absolutely nothing about basic concepts of rights, goods, and the purpose of the state, and you have no fucking place participating in this adult discussion. At the K-12 level, it is not a fucking product. Having a better educated, more cultured populace makes the nation better for everyone. It directly impacts our economy, cuts down on crime, improves health, etc.
But just because it should be publicly funded doesn't mean it should be publicly governed. Bureaucracy is the death of efficiency. Give them the fucking money and then take your hands off.

charter schools would only have an advantage if we permitted them to expel unruly students with ease and impunity, and without having to follow the convoluted "appeals" system present in public schools where education has been defined as a "right" that can't just be "revoked" without "due process."
if they have to become part of that whole mess just in order to expel students, then nothing much would change at all.
in any case, you can only teach the students you actually have, and in some places, the "human capital" is not that great, and the structure of the school is more or less irrelevant to overall performance.

what you fail to understand, brainless faggot, is that student behavior can be greatly affected from an early age by the structure of the school system itself (e.g. uniforms, strict rules, longer hours, serious detentions where you have to sit up straight in complete silence, staring at the fucking wall)
and teacher unions are the single most important reason
charters >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> state-run
