Why do you bemoan the amount of money that is spent on public education? Is it because liberalism is a mental disorder?

Many conservatives believe that American public education is in poor shape today because of cultural and social trends, most beginning in the 1960s, which destroyed classroom discipline, the moral basis for education, and a national consensus on what students should learn. Again, there is some truth in this proposition, but ultimately it fails to explain why American students do not possess the communication and computational skills they need today to succeed in college or in the working world

The history of public education reform is a story in which these groups—sometimes in concert and sometimes in opposition to professional educators with their own designs—jockey for position to make their indelible mark on the school policies of the day. Reform efforts have reappeared regularly, in the 1940s, the watchword was “life adjustment education.” Educators, worried about a growing dropout rate and the seemingly frantic pace of post-War technological innovations, sought to help students adjust to a changing world. One example of a class introduced in public schools during this period was entitled “Basic Urges, Wants, and Needs and Making Friends and Keeping Them.” That’s the 1940s, not the 1960s.

Another bunch of stupid c/ping from you. When you are dealing with the educational trends for a nation of 300M people, anecdotal info is IRRELEVANT. Sure, in such a large country you are bound to find weird and stupid shit being taught in just about any era. That does not however, have relevance to a discussion regarding the trend of ever-increasing expenditure on education and increasingly poor or uncompetitive results.

Uniform salary schedules were originally enacted to address racial and social inequities among teachers, not as a “better way” of organizing the teaching force. These inequities have largely been addressed and can be prevented by other means. But like so many governmental policies, uniform salary schedules have outlived their usefulness. Reorganization might involve paying teachers of one subject more than teachers of another subject, or paying a good teacher with ten years’ experience more than a mediocre teacher with 15 years’ experience. As education researcher Denis Doyle of the Hudson Institute wrote: “There is no mystery as to how to find and retain qualified teachers of mathematics or the sciences. Pay them what the market demands, provide them with benefits that are competitive, and create a work environment in which they can derive genuine professional satisfaction. Pay differentials are the answer.”

Both liberal do-gooders and conservative culture warriors look to public education to achieve public goods. In the 1950s and 1960s, a national focus on the problem of racial segregation helped steer education policy away from questions of excellence to questions of equity and access. In the 1970s, activists bent on such diverse causes as environmentalism, humanism, spiritualism, and even socialism began to target the school curriculum. They produced all sorts of programs, handbooks, textbooks, and other materials, and used political influence to have these adopted as part of the school day in many jurisdictions. Meanwhile, America’s developmental psychologists and early childhood experts, deep in their environmentalist (in the sense of non- genetic) phase, got the attention of educators and political leaders. They argued that formal education should be supplemented with special counseling and self-esteem programs, that formal education should be extended into the preschool years, and that the federal government should be involved in funding these early- intervention and compensatory education programs.

To be clear: the salary issue is COMPLETELY MISSING THE POINT.

Without a massive shift in the way most parents engage with their children's academics, we won't see much improvement. Academic success begins at home with the right mindset and supervision.

Note that Asian and Indian families are somehow able to massively out perform other cultures academically in this country.

That is the fundamental problem with education: it is public.

You would not have a long-running inequity amongst teachers in the private sector. Those schools that hired whites over equally competent blacks at double the wage would go broke in the free-market fairly quickly, especially as social norms change.

Moreover, the entire second bit of this further proves the issue with public systems. In whose interest is it to even bother keeping track of the quality of the teachers, the attrition rate of good math and science teachers, and then also trying to find a "competitive market-rate" for them? Who is going to do that out of the kindness of their heart? You get rid of the profit-incentive and all you are left with is a handful of people who actually want to do good work for the sake of it. The rest of the administrators are going to punch out without giving a shit about all that stuff.

Thats not privatization in the same sense, retard.

There are shitloads of reasons why the current prison system (both "privatized" and public) are actually still public, but let us focus on the major difference between public v. private, INCENTIVES:

Who pays for prisoners to be kept?

Do you understand how you have the exact same problem as before with incentives since the gov't is paying for it? Look, it does not matter if the gov't goes out and hires 100 security guards, purchases a building and houses criminals inside or if it outsources the purchase and operations to a 3rd party. PAYMENT is still coming from the gov't. The lack of a connection between the payer and who the services are meant to benefit is the problem in public schools and is just as much a problem in "privatized" prisons. If you weren't such an idiot you would have realized this within a moments thought.

Why do you insist on opening your mouth in these matters? How many times do I have to utterly demolish you?

Correctional Corporations (something you favor, as a libertarian) have amassed large political influence through government ties, lobbying power and campaign contributions, while attempting to convert the discourse of justice into the language of the marketplace. In this way, they accuse government agencies as having a monopoly on corrections, espouse the need to downsize and cut through red tape. They claim that they can run prisons more efficiently and cheaper, doing a better job and saving the taxpayers money.

Go back to my education post. The key distinction (in the context of public education) between free market and public are INCENTIVES. How does this supposed "privatization" of the prison system change anything to do with incentives?

Look, in essence with the advent of "private" prisons, nothing has changed. When you had "public" prisons you still paid money to private actors (such as the guards, cooks, building construction, etc.), all that has changed with "private" prisons is that you are lump-summing the payment for that 3rd party to allocate instead of the gov't allocating itself to 3rd parties. The nature of the exchange is still the same: gov't paying 3rd party.

Its become a renewed manifestation of crony capitalism--the problem with libertarian thought is that it necessarily produces and perpetuates the conditions of crony capitalism.

Whenever society’s wealth is concentrated in the hands of a tiny minority, an inherent feature of capitalist society, the 1% will naturally use that wealth to direct the political process. Libertarians find nothing abominable about the glaring disparities in wealth or in the disparities in access to political power.

If you cut political powers down to its bare bones (or none at all), how can it be hijacked? Moreover, in a libtarded state is where you actually see such disparity in wealth, except that this disparity comes from those with political power rather than monetary wealth. Finally, what nonsense is it the society's wealth is concentrated in the hands of a tiny majority in capitalist society? Can you name a society/system that had a more even split of the same level of wealth?

Wrong. This is the typical fear of a libtard, but it is utterly incorrect. Libertarians want to demolish the entire gov't apparatus. With no more power, there is nothing to corrupt. Crony Capitalism lies with Conservatives and Liberals as both parties seek to retain and enhance the power of the state which necessarily leads to private interests taking over.

Also, I am still waiting for an answer re: prisons. As is your typical MO, you try and weasel out.

wow you are really dense. As CGM noted above, prisons are a different case because the privitely-run prisons service only one client -- the government. It is a like a single payer system for prisoners (instead of the health insurance).

Privatized schools, on the other hand, competing for disparate customers without contending with that same monopsony bargaining power will have very different incentives to perform and stay afloat than public schools do, which currently exist only so that teachers unions can automatically deduct dues from members' paychecks padded by federal subsidy.

You're an idiot. The role of public schooling is to help foster Americanization. I don't want public money going to subsidize fucking yeshivas for Jews or madrassas for terrorists. Public systems may suck, but they provide a uniform base of experience for American citizenry. It's getting fucked up because of politics demanding that schools stop teaching proper science in science class.

One of my less-than-academically-gifted cousins was in HOTS in elementary school. I admit that the specific program targeted can have questionable results.

However, they explicitly reject exposure to "critical thinking skills" that might "challeng[e] the student’s fixed beliefs" because they fear it will "undermin[e] parental authority" to teach kids that Satan planted dinosaur bones in the earth to test man's faith in the Bible.

Our country is TTT because the GOP is TTT.

Those countries aren't run by religious fanatics who dominate American political discourse. They also have common values and respect for education, both of which are not presenet in America. Introducing vouchers and a market system in the US would lead to a bunch of Catholic schools, madrassas, and yeshivas sucking up all the money, with Asians going to SAT prep courses to try to get into HAHVARD.

- per capita in dollars

- per capita as % of GDP

I'll try to find the link where I saw this.

So you're saying we should spend less money on public education? How would that help America?

You utterly fail to realize that Americans hate education, unlike many of the other countries that succeed in education. You have politicians trashing "elites" and those who attend college. You have the GOP in Texas issuing an education policy that literally opposes the teaching of critical thinking skills because it might cause children not to blindly obey their parents. You have idiots who are pushing for the teaching of "intelligent design" in American science classes. More dumbasses are demanding that public money should be issued as vouchers that can be spent in predominantly religious private institutions.

Most of the morons causing most of the problems with education are conservatards. Then they look at the problems with the system, which they caused, and say that we should just stop funding public education. So what's their alternative?

Defund public schools. Dis-entitle teachers unions. Provide subsidized vouchers to attend privately run (obviously subject to oversight against overt incitement of violence) schools. Let schools compete for students instead of allotments.

You realize that most of the vouchers will go towards madrassas, yeshivas, and Catholic private schools that teach warped views, right? The point of public education is to Americanize and to provide a common basis and communal experience. Are you not understanding that?

No, there wouldn't be outright censorship standards against non-economically harmful controversy. If parents want their kids to learn creationism/evolution then so be it. It's not that economically harmful. What is harmful would be teachers telling their students they should riot and light buildings on fire. Blatant disrespect for the rule of law, rather than educating them on the proper means to change laws they feel are unjust.

As opposed to our tax dollars going to teachers unions?

And as long as those madrassas and yeshivas are not promoting violence and destruction and a disrespect for the rule of law, then sure, why not. That's the parents' prerogative. If a Catholic school or any school has instances of nonconsensual sex abuse, the perpetrator should be prosecuted, and the school investigated for the adequacy of supervision and hiring policies, as an additional disincentive or fail-safe to parents likely pulling their kids out of that school once news surfaces.

Freedom of religion is an American value, retard. And voucher subsidization isn't there to promote any particular religion against the Establishment clause, it would be there to stave off the detrimental and perhaps choatic effect of hoards of roaming children which would be the result of shutting down the public schools, which needs to happen immediately. Vouchers are a transitionary easing mechanism until supply expands.

If by "learning to hate America" you mean "learning about American history," then that's really unavoidable. We slaughtered all the American Indians, then had slaves. Then we sicced dogs on blacks after we firebombed Dresden and nuked Japan twice. You can have your own viewpoints on these events, but you can't forbid their teaching to our children.

Our children need to be able to decide what kind of country they want America to be. Shielding them and preventing them from thinking is not going to help them.

Schools have the benefit of forcing us to sit down with the drooling retards and learning to how do with them. Vouchers will lead to Jews going to yeshivas, Muslims to madrassas, Asians to SAT prep schools, gays to Catholic school, and blacks in public school. Then all of these assholes will graduate after 12 years of education, go to college (well, not the blacks), and then realize that they do not share a common base of American experience such as football, pledging allegiance to the flag, and trying to fuck hot cheerleaders.

Little children can't think for themselves. They are literally not capable of that at this point in their mental development. What you have is an important authority figure, the teacher, taking controversial positions that disagree with the parents' positions. And the curriculum demands that the children accept this.

OBE has been discontinued around the world in most places where it was implemented.

What the fuck are you talking about? The French system will pay for education in a religious school, and, from Wikipedia, "under strict conditions of not forcing religion courses on students and not discriminating against students according to religion."

I don't know, but school vouchers for all are a bunch of bullshit.

Private School costs are following higher education costs. My private High School costs twice as much now than it did when I was there, and I graduated less than a decade ago.

You know how much it would cost if everyone got a school voucher? Exactly what it costs now PLUS whatever a school voucher covers. It wouldn't draw in any new students.

Vouchers are fucking scam. You're just going to get a bunch of "private" schools that spring up to make money off of them and they're going to suck balls. It's also just nonsense to get the gov to subsidize fundie schools.

Schools can be required to charge no more than the amount of the voucher or some other amount.

Vouchers are, by and large, not the answer.

Charters absolutely are. Watch Waiting for Superman.

It is physically impossible at a state-run school to:

- create any coherent sense of law and order, culture of respect (both for authority and peers), intellectual curiosity, and hard work. Charter schools largely succeed because they can have longer school days, uniforms, stricter behavioral rules, etc. David Brooks makes good points here in The Social Animal.

- fire a teacher. There was literally a case in NY recently in which a lesbo nigger teacher had had sexual harassment complaints filed against her multiple times. The school COULD NOT fire her because she had unionized tenure. Teacher tenure is the most buttfucking retarded system I can possibly imagine. It's bad enough at the higher education level, but TENURE for high school teachers, simply based on the number of years you've managed to pass a handful of niggers through your recycled lesson plan? Holy fucking shit. They need to run it like a goddamn business. Hire the best people, pay them well, fire them if they don't perform, hire someone better. It's not that fucking complicated.

- be flexible in curricula and technology. It would absolutely be better to literally sell every. single. textbook. in the ENTIRE public education system, take the money, buy a 1st or 2nd gen used iPad for every student, and assign Khan Academy for homework every night. Only a charter school can make decisions like this fast enough to keep pace with the modern world.

tl;dr our public education system was created in the industrial age to mirror an assembly line. 2012 is not the fucking industrial age. Keep the little fuckers in line, but create a dynamic environment that allows them to master the basics at their own pace while exploring their personal interests.

Bill fucking Gates spends literally BILLIONS of dollars on charter schools. People who don't think they're a better system should gas themselves immediately.

You realize that charter schools are just public schools without unions, right? That's basically it, plus no central curriculum planning.

You're not being a very good shitlib by supporting them.

Education is a public good. If you disagree with this, you know absolutely nothing about basic concepts of rights, goods, and the purpose of the state, and you have no fucking place participating in this adult discussion. At the K-12 level, it is not a fucking product. Having a better educated, more cultured populace makes the nation better for everyone. It directly impacts our economy, cuts down on crime, improves health, etc.

But just because it should be publicly funded doesn't mean it should be publicly governed. Bureaucracy is the death of efficiency. Give them the fucking money and then take your hands off.

charter schools would only have an advantage if we permitted them to expel unruly students with ease and impunity, and without having to follow the convoluted "appeals" system present in public schools where education has been defined as a "right" that can't just be "revoked" without "due process."

if they have to become part of that whole mess just in order to expel students, then nothing much would change at all.

in any case, you can only teach the students you actually have, and in some places, the "human capital" is not that great, and the structure of the school is more or less irrelevant to overall performance.

they should be sent to "reform schools" like in the old days, which was basically a method of isolating the fuckups from the regulars. and if you do well in reform school, you might even get a shot at regular school again, too.

what you fail to understand, brainless faggot, is that student behavior can be greatly affected from an early age by the structure of the school system itself (e.g. uniforms, strict rules, longer hours, serious detentions where you have to sit up straight in complete silence, staring at the fucking wall)

and teacher unions are the single most important reason

charters >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> state-run

student behavior has to do with things like discipline and general order. obviously it's better to have order than not.

but again, a charter school can't magically take some kid with an IQ in the low/middle-80's and turn him into a future doctor/chemist/whatever. the best a charter school can do is help those kids reach whatever the potential of an 83 IQ happens to be, which unfortunately isn't that much.

a) not if they get the kid in 3rd grade. The developmental potential between elementary school and high school is fucking insane

b) sure, but they can turn the kid into a respectable, well-behaved 83 IQ who can graduate and hold down a decent job. You realize the dropout rate at many public HSs is well over 50% now? The men go straight into crime, and the women intentionally get knocked up to score a bigger welfare check.

Srsly though. I don't give a shit that they're poor. The problem is they're poor and killing people, smoking crack, and wasting resources in prison

and the fact that thousands upon thousands of hoodrat girls actually want a baby just for the extra cash is behavior straight out of the third world.
