Most people don't understand James Blunt's deep irony. In his hit single, "You're Beautiful", perhaps his most misunderstood song, he explodes the romantic myth. He picks the most vapid cliches to praise the beloved, while reserving for himself the choicest adjectives ("My life is brilliant. My love is pure.") and even supernatural agency (how many angels does this pinhead require?). "We shared a moment..." But notice that nothing's shared. Love is a fleeting, masturbatory moment, not an inspiration to eternal truth, as for Plato, Dante, and Petrarch.

Late capitalism has deprived us of our vocabulary for authentically expressing love. Even the guitar sounds tinny. But how do we know Blunt isn't just a shitty artist who can't write a song to save his worthless life? We can't. Therein lies his genius.

Of course. Blunt just calls attention to how narcissistic the whole exercise is. Most love songs indulge in lavish idealized portrayals of the beloved, exhaustively describing the imagined relationship ("Save the Best for Last" is a typical example). Blunt's homage to his woman is perfunctory, almost cold. It's all about him.

The majority of "hit" radio songs have accomplished two things: 1. they make the singer out to be a winner(whether the songwriter is the singer, or whether the song happens to be sung by another artist than the person who wrote the song) i.e., hit songs never share anything that ends unhappily for the singer (narrator) UNLESS the lyrics ultimately draw some positive conclusion from the unhappy circumstance(s); and 2. most "hit" songs are actually scripts intricately designed to make women feel good about themselves; data show that 50% of commercially available music is bought by women, while most of the remaining purchases are made by men trying to influence/better understand women.

You're exactly right. James Blunt turns both these tropes on their heads. The singer's a winner because he was fucking high. The woman's beautiful, it's true, but the song stretches that out to the point of mockery.
