If it was something like a SJ motion, he has no excuses. Even if the arguments are off, it should be relatively straightforward.
But if it's something obscure where 5 people in the history of the earth ever did, and he messed up, cut him some slack.
Example, once a dude asked me to draft some NY REAL PROPERTY MOTION Discharging a mortgage. There were no samples, he had no idea how to do it, and the clerk of the court was like "LOL". I had no idea what law it was based on.
I ended up doing it based on reading the CPLR and the NY Real Property Law and it took THREE filings for the judge to actually accept it.
Client was pissed it took so long but MY BAD BRO I HAD NO IDEA HOW TO DO IT. |

If it is $12 an hour and is drafting Motions or briefs or has some esoteric research assignment then maybe not. As you shoudld have been more on top of it. This doesn't sound like is the case though.
Sidenote: When I was a clerk, I was getting $10-15. One time, a Partner wrote "shit" on one of the briefs I drafted for him. The only real reason he told me he wrote it was because I didn't repetitively include a common phrase/piece of jargon that he had wrote in the margins a few times. I will never forget that day.
I probably would have little pity for a highly paid kid who just does shit work on petty shit.
