In my ARE COUNTRY area, lawyers almost never break 80K. True, 80K in ARE COUNTRY is good, but people on xo really underestimate the impact of inflation and cost of special goods. A truck in Nebraska isn't that much cheaper than one in NYC. COL is overblown. Still can't retire. Shitty/no 401Ks. Health insurance sucks and health costs are higher. College tuition is the same.

Also significantly limits mobility. Can go from urban to ARE COUNTRY because the $ goes further. Not the reverse.

Sad thing is, they will start a lawyer at like 35K and that lawyer is expected to be SO FUCKING HAPPY. You better work 8-7pm every day.

I never got the make $60 as a lawyer and live in a low COL city.

How about make $200K for a few years, then if you want move to a low COL city and country and take the same $60K job, or fuck it, dont work at all or become a mountain man.

Once you save several hundred thousand dollars, it becomes more realistic to be able to actually say fuck it all and move to SE asia and live on the beach for $20K a year for the rest of your life.

That said, 5+ years in a big firm will poison your mind such that the money is never enough and you will be incapable of walking away to relax on the beach. Instead you will spend the money on the new condo/tesla.

I experienced this sticker shock after moving back home. After talking to a couple of local attorneys that offered me jobs at $50k, I politely said "no thank you!" That same week I had offers from banks that started at 75K, an accounting firm that offered 70K and a shitty oilfield company that I would make nearly 100k as a roustabout. I chose the roustabout job working with convicted felons, drug addicted morons and high school dropouts. All made significantly more than any of the lawyer jobs. Best decision of my life. The roustabout job was a lot of fun and got me active. It was easy to shine when I was surrounded by idiots. It also lead to my current cushy "company" job.

Depends on what the lawyer makes, but yes. And that's only working half the year on a week on/week off schedule. If I wanted to work more, I could have made more. I think my first year I made about 85k because I didn't want to work a 3 week on/1 week off schedule all the time.

To be fair, not everyone made that much. The shitty workers were laid off for a few months around Christmas because there wasn't a lot of work. But the good workers stayed busy and had all the hours they wanted. I think I started off at $24/hr. So, I had quite a few 16 hour days and I did work a few 3 week hitches. The 16 hour days weren't like working in a law office though (OBVS), they were a lot more fun because you were busy and you could actually see the results of your labors.

TBF, a lot of that time is sitting around in a truck, smoke shack, or break room waiting on other people to finish up.

Also, that was THE entry level job. It doesn't get much lower on the totem pole than roustabout, and it was still much more fulfilling than sitting in any office.

LOL. I'm not a roughneck. I work in an oil processing facility. All indoors and barely any manual labor. Those roughnecks are a rough looking bunch.

Right. That was my first job in the oilfields. I've still never worked on an actual rig. I've been on platforms and seen the roughnecks working a lot though.

Yeah. I know they do things differently all over, but Environmental and Safety are huge up here. Nothing is done without getting Safety and Environmental to review the procedure. Especially if a confined space is involved.

NOTE: Lawyers who hate their lives.

It wouldn't be that difficult to segway a legal career into an Environmental or Safety position. Usually they are in the same department and these guys do no work. They just ensure jobs are done right and safely with no environmental impact. A lot of this is just knowing the regs. But, these guys do a mixture of compliance and in field work and make about 150k up here.

REMINDER to biglaw know-nothings who think they are making real money while looking at documents: your clients make real money. You make shit and work much harder for it.
