90% of insufferable biglaw whining comes from people for whom biglaw was their first job.
Look, work sucks. It sucks everywhere, it sucks to varying degrees. Very very very few people are actually happy at their jobs.
And yeah, biglaw sucks more than many other jobs in a lot of ways, but don't kid yourself: while it's possible that if you didn't go to LS you might've gotten a decent-paying better-than-biglaw job, it's even more likely you'd be among the countless people out there working just as hard as biglawyers and with just as little job security who are making a fraction as much money.

This is the exact kind of insufferable whining I was talking about. Oh, woe is me! We have it worse than everyone else!
1) We're not the most suicidal profession; we rank 12th. Doctors, FYI, are #2.
2) We're not the most stressed. We're not even in the top #10. And sure, most of us aren't weighing being a lawyer against being a combat soldier (#1), firefighter (#2) or cop (#5), but event planners, PR reps and corporate execs all have higher stress levels than lawyers.
3) Lawyers are not in the top 10 jobs for either alcoholism or illegal drug use.
Yes, plenty of people in biglaw hate their jobs and fantasize about leaving (though it's not unanimous, don't be ridiculous).
But guess what: MOST PEOPLE IN MOST JOBS HATE THEIR JOB AND FANTASIZE ABOUT LEAVING.
Part of thinking that you're a special snowflake involves thinking you are unique, you are set apart. You have that mentality because you think that your lot as a biglawyer is worse than everyone else's. It's not. Sorry, you aren't uniquely screwed. You don't have it worse than everyone else. Life really is just that hard.

Some days i agree with this. Other days i feel there must be a better way to live than what i am doing.
And I had jobs before law school. I lived paycheck to paycheck, which sucked. But I could make plans to enjoy my weekend and know those plans would actually become a reality. I underrated the latter.
Problem is now I'm spoiled and the idea of going back to a life of not being able to buy what I want, go out to eat where I want, etc, is hard for me to swallow.

Poor fella, you're trying way too hard. You don't have any insight; you're simply repeating the same mantra that every biglaw-seeking law student has told themselves. I'm sorry.
"According to an often cited Johns Hopkins University study of more than 100 occupations, researchers found that lawyers lead the nation with the highest incidence of depression.(1)
An ABA Young Lawyers Division survey indicated that 41 percent of female attorneys were unhappy with their jobs.(2)
In 1996, lawyers overtook dentists as the profession with the highest rate of suicide.(3)
The ABA estimates that 15-20 percent of all U.S. lawyers suffer from alcoholism or substance abuse.(4)
Seven in ten lawyers responding to a California Lawyers magazine poll said they would change careers if the opportunity arose.(5)"

I have the same insight as you - is it so incomprehensible that not everyone in biglaw is as whiny as you? I'm not saying biglaw is all sunshine and rainbows. There are tons of things I hate about my job (most of all, the hours), but I'm under no illusion that we lawyers are sooooooo special and that we have it worse than everyone else.
BTW all the numbers I posted are from recent studies as well. If you're going to cherry-pick data, you might as well at least want to use data from this century; not 1996. And of course all the ABA studies find that things are bad for lawyers. That crap is biased. Use studies that are not from specific professional organizations and that don't have an agenda.

It doesn't surprise me. Biglaw is not a job that most people can or should stay in longterm. It's not an industry structured around sustainable careers for most incoming associates. I doubt I'll be around more than a few more years myself.
But you can do your time and get out, knowing full well it's not a longterm path for you, without coming to the ridiculous conclusion that NO ONE - absolutely NO ONE has it worse than lawyers.
It's called perspective. Grow up and get some.

FALSE. I worked a great variety of jobs from the age of 14 on.
Biglaw just sucks. It's not hard necessarily. It just sucks and is a waste of life.
The hilarious and pathetic thing is that people do biglaw for the money and it's not even THAT much money. You're not getting rich. It's like two normal jobs to squeeze extra cash out of the moments that comprise your useless life.

1) Most people feel like their jobs suck and are a waste of life. The fact that you did some random part-time job when you were 14 so you had more spending money does not mean you know what it's like to feel trapped in a normal office job making $70k with little opportunity for advancement, knowing full well that will be your life for the next 30 years (if you're lucky enough not to be laid off).
2) Biglawyers make more money than the vast majority of people will ever see in their lives. Whether you're getting "rich" is all a matter of perspective - you could save up a few hundred thousand by the time you're midlevel and then go live in a low COL area at an above average lifestyle (for those in the low COL area). People don't realize this because they lack imagination and are unable to comprehend what life is like outside their own narrow experiences. You've never experienced real want, or real suffering.
To reiterate: quit your insufferable whining. Others have it far worse than you. You don't get to feel like you've uniquely suffered a horrible fate by spending a few years of your life in biglaw.

1. If he worked many jobs from the age of 14 he probably knows perfectly well what the $70k office job felt like.
2. Are you even a lawyer? Hundred bucks says you're a law student. Get off your pedestal with "people don't realize this," "you've never experienced real want," etc.
You don't know shit.

Lol, I'm a biglaw lit midlevel. I'm speaking based on my own insights and experience.
I'm just not a "woe is me" whiny bitch like you.
There's real suffering out there in the world. Lots of it. Don't pretend your life falls anywhere in the ballpark of that category.

You seem to struggle with either nuance or reading comprehension, so I'll make it easy for you:
About half of my class is no longer at my firm, but most are still in biglaw (many have lateralled to other firms). A few are now in gov jobs, in-house, or in smaller firms. A handful realized that law wasn't for them and have left practice altogether.
But here's the thing: as much as I and they complain, neither I nor they are so self-absorbed to think we have it worse than anyone else. Actually, I take it back: I know one such guy - he's a senior associate who despite bitching ceaselessly is still here. He bills a TON of hours, possible out of a misguided hope he can make partner. He won't.

Right, because my saying that biglaw sucks about as much as most jobs (but doesn't suck worse than every other job in creation) and that I have plenty of complaints about biglaw is EXACTLY the same as me saying that biglaw is "as good as it gets."
Ok, either you're running some low IQ shtick or you're legitimately dumb.
Either way, I'm done arguing with you.

I think every dude should strive to spend their first few years out of college/law school as a single dude in MFH.
If you make 80-170k as a 22 year old single dude in MFH, and you don't give a fuck about saving a penny, you can live the life: slaying pussy, good night life, cool shit to do. Once you start caring about saving up it's a pretty shitty place, though.

If you make 80-170k as a young single dude in MFH, you often work 80 hours a week and work a job requiring you to check your email every 15 minutes all day, every day.
Not much time for fun.
Young + high-income + free time = FLAME.
It's the people in their late 20s and early 30s who have actual fun and happiness...
