I don't know how much of this is accurate. I left the practice of law over 20 years ago. I was working in a large firm doing interesting work. However, much of the work I was doing had artificial self-imposed deadlines that required the long-hours, weekends and holiday grinds to get done. There wasn't a pressing a need for a brief to be filed or anything else like that. I don't think anything more than billing was really at the heart of the pace at which we were asked to work.

I left that world to go into business and acquire the work/life balance I sought as a new dad. I didn't want to miss my kids growing up and I don't regret having made the change. I knew it was a choice that would impact my earnings but I wasn't going to be an absent father. I also wasn't going to give my employer less than what they expected.

When I come home from work now - there is no more "Daddy, Daddy, Daddy". The kids are grown and I yearn for the intellectual challenge and ability to make a difference in the lives of people that practicing law can provide. If Barnes is right - I have little future to hope for. I was just admitted in Virginia and will be sitting for the NY bar exam later this month. Maybe I'll land a challenging interesting worthwhile position as an attorney. Maybe not. But I got to be the dad I wanted to be.
