My dad was a hobbyist like this. We made radios, phono preamps, speakers (including semi custom drivers) growing up but nothing more complex than 1960s era analog. He didn't know digital circuits. I learned a lot but it's all a very expensive hobby.

you used to be able to teach yourself all this stuff fairly easily just by reading lots of magazine articles like the one in the OP. now, digital design has become so abstruse that it takes an advanced degree and lots of specialized equipment to do more than play around with prebuilt modules.
