Meanwhile, the price of an all-day adult lift ticket at Mt. Bachelor, the most expensive in the state, has held steady from last year. But it’ll cost as much as $224 at the ticket window. A family of four — two adults and two children — will pay between $724 and $798.

Ben Hansen, an economics professor at University of Oregon and an avid skier, has watched the intricate and complex system of pricing at Oregon’s ski resorts evolve over the years. As of Friday, the highest priced season stood at $1,499, at Mt. Bachelor.

it's a pricing strategy to drive people toward season passes or 4 packs of tickets. the article mentions increases in insurance but all ski resorts have higher costs and in the face of additional risk and costs, they're trying to lock in more revenue in advance of the season.

the strategy for people trying to get into the sport is to start on the cheapest, smallest hills. build some basic skills for a season, then if you want to ski more, buy a season pass and go a lot. you can bring down the cost per day of a lift ticket to a reasonable $40-50. it will never be a cheap sport but doesn't have to be exorbitant.
