LSE said they wanted academic references from my most recent school. But I've been out of school for 4 years and only kept in really good contact with one professor.

I transferred schools and can get a really good academic reference from a prof from the school I transferred from.

Should I go against what they advise so that I'll give two stellar references, or go by the rules and give them one that is from a prof who probably doesn't remember me?

Ask them directly. If you "transferred," does that mean that credits from your older institution went toward the same degree? If so, it's probably okay. But best to clear in advance that you may interpret "most recent school" as "most recent degree."
