How prestigious is a Fulbright scholarship? And how much of a boost will it give my PhD applications / job applications (if I decide against PhD) once I'm done? I'm finishing up an MA now but the Fulbright committee is really dragging its feet on my country; they're now saying it might not be until May that they give us notification. There's one PhD program that I'm considering that still has an application open for funding, and I'm considering applying to that and seeing where the chips fall. And I'm also tempted to work for a year or two before PhD, which would require me to start looking now.

How foolish would it be to turn down a Fulbright? I feel like I'd regret not taking it IF I get it, but on the other hand I'd feel like an idiot for not working on contingency plans if I get rejected in May.

not terribly prestigious, but it can help with PhD admissions, since it a) demonstrates a minimal competence that is still probably top 20% or so in a given application pool and b), more importantly, allows you to domonstrate the ability to do substantive research.
