took them long enough. guess they couldn't find any room in the budget for me.

right now, leaning toward just sticking with my current program and finishing up as quickly as i possibly can.

bummer, but at least i have a program to fall back on. odd that they seemed so enthusiastic about me at first, but such is the nature of the beast, i guess.

Why not cut your losses? Petition for some type of terminal master's and use it selectively with prospective employers.

sorry to hear that man. really, that sucks.

I agree that the best course of action is to try and finish ASAP. that would mean a whole different orientation, right? No more extraneous papers, conference presenting, etc. Just requirements, prospectus, dissertation and out (publishing and presenting only the fruits of this process).

im debating between the two paths myself - its a tricky beast. One side allegedly sets you up better for an academic gig. again, allegedly. the other side gets you out and moving on.

whats your timeframe like now?

if i go balls to the wall, i can be finished in 2 years (MAYBE 3 semesters if I really hit it hard, but this is highly unlikely). i'm taking my last two courses in the fall, and my goal is to take my prelims at the end of next semester.

right now, the plan is to quit my job and travel a bit this summer, then come back and just get this thing done. my department really emphasizes conference presentations and publications, but if my goal is to get into the policy world, then as you said, it will be more beneficial to me not to bend over backwards to pad my CV in preparation for some sort of tenure-track gig (which i probably wouldn't be able to get anyway, given my limited talent in this area). i think that, if you're in a top program, those little extras become less essential than they are if you're in a shitshow like I am.

people who are in the top few programs in their field can rely more than others on the reputation of their department to carry them. other departments can be pretty sure that they're getting a competent scholar when they hire someone graduating from a top program, even if that graduate didn't do a ton of publishing or presenting. if you're in an average program, though, you need to work much harder to prove yourself and your skill set, and that means presenting at every conference opportunity and publishing as much as you possibly can (which, as a grad student, usually means being second author on a bunch of faculty papers).

yeah, same here. there are probably more non-academic options for someone in my field than there are for most of the social sciences, but you're right--in order to even have a prayer of a tenure-track job in academia, you pretty much need to invest everything you have from an energy standpoint into doing the degree the "right way." what makes it even more annoying is that many of the big conferences in my field are overseas, and we are only allotted something like $500/yr for travel by the department, so we end up having to pay out of pocket or find some sort of outside funding if we want to present at or attend most conferences. it's a real pain in the ass.

Ok. How does this balance play out if you want to go into policy work or the private sector? Thanks man.

well, it depends on what you want to do, but if you're like me, and you want to do grassroots or lobbying communication work in the policy world, it's far more important that you network with the right people (presumably through past work experience) and write a compelling dissertation. the crediential itself and the skills that come with it are what lots of private sector organizations are most interested in, with publications and whatnot being an added bonus. on the flip side, for academia, they are looking closely at your academic CV (papers, publications, ability to be productive as a scholar) and don't really care about past work experience or networking outside of the academic universe.

btw, i'm also fairly sure you wouldn't have the balls to confront me or anyone else on this board IRL.
