Hi all. Would appreciate your thoughts on what I'm about to do.

I'm going back for an MA for Fall 2010. I've considered applying to SIPA, Fletcher, but I've come to the conclusion that SAIS is the right school for me. I want to do China Studies and I think I would grow immensely from the focus on econ. I don't see the point in going to NYC or Boston to study or practice IR (although SIPA and Fletcher are great schools) and in conversations with colleagues 'in the know' I've had more than one person tell me that the SAIS curriculum is much more rigorous than Gtowns. I'm sure that this is the right decision for me, and I'd be willing to wait a year if I don't get in this go-round, even taking econ courses in the interim to buff. But I've only taken 1 intro econ course (B+), and zero quant courses during UG.

Thoughts? Do I need to hedge my bets?

Have you looked over the economic requirements for SAIS? They require a minimum completion of Micro and Macro economics, but as you seem to suggest, it's possible to be offered a place in their program contingent on whether you complete the econ requirements in summer '10. Also, have you taken any stats or calculus courses? They're not required but helpful, especially if your GRE quant score is below their average. The econ/math skills factor will probably be the biggest roadblock for you since so much of their program emphasizes economics & mathematics. Other than that, you seem like you're a solid candidate.

But, if I were you, and if you're seriously intent on beginning a Master's program in Fall 2010 (regardless of whether it's at SAIS or not), I'd apply to a couple of back up schools. Just in case. The admissions process behind these top program seems really arbitrary sometimes.
