i know someone who is thinking of applying to graduate programs in philosophy. he has a master's. i don't know much about the relative strengths of philosophy programs, and was curious about which schools have the best or most competitive programs. anyone?

I have a friend who's looking at graduate programs in philosophy as well (I believe her focus is continental?). She's mentioned applying to Gtown, UChicago and some programs in the UK. Regardless, it depends on what branch of philosophy your friend is interested in...different schools have different strengths, so it's difficult to say that one school is "the best" when it comes to philosophy.

lol @ your stupid friend. at least 2 of her choices are massive toilets. she's well on her way to an illustrious career in community-college instruction.

Depends on which area of philosophy he's interested in. Also, is he interested in a career in academia?

NYU, Princeton, Harvard, and Rutger are all very strong schools for most areas of phil.
