Subject: New School vs City College: MA in IR

I was wondering which school/program would be better for an MA in International Affairs/Relations. Costs are key, and I'm trying to figure out if the extra 10,000/year at New School is worth the investment.

Thoughts?

Just IMO, but I think if you're not able to attend a top tier IR program you really aren't going to see a return on your investment. It's not like spending big $$ to attend medical school or law school, where you at least have a definable "skill set" after graduating. In the case of IR (sometimes unfortunately) the NAME/RANK of the school matters a lot. See the new Foreign Policy Rankings (Inside the Ivory Tower, Mar/Apr 09) to see what the top tier looks like. APSIA is also a good place to start.

If you are sure the MA in IR is the route you want to go, I'd recommend taking a few years to gain more impressive international experience, work on your GRE score and language skills, and possibly network at a more reputable institution.

Good luck to you.

Seconded. I never even heard of IR programs at these schools. Can't imagine the grads getting decent jobs. SAIS/SIPA/KSG/WWS/GW/American grads have enough trouble, but sweet Jesus, City vs. New School? I mean damn, better invest that money and learn a new language -- 2 years of Arabic would be far more marketable than an IR degree from one of those places.

Yes this is true. Id say take a few more years and make yourself more marketable for a well known IR program. If youre interested in security - perhaps join a military branch as an officer. If youre interested in development - look into the Peace Corp etc.
