Subject: My chance for SIPA? WE for SIPA, which job to take?

I just graduated from a lib arts college. econ major. GPA 3.75.

GMAT 700

born & raised in a third-world country. went to college in the US.

financial industry intern experiences in different countries. (firms with big name)

right now have two job offers:

one is with one of the big four accounting firms.

one is the international management trainee program with a regional/kinda global commercial bank.

both jobs are in Asia, the banking job has overseas training programs.

1. What are my chances getting into SIPA? Will try to find some volunteer work this summer.

2. which job should i choose if i want to get into SIPA?

3. i can use gmat instead of GRE, is my GMAT score enough? or should I take it again or should I take GRE instead?

Thank you guys soo much!!!

Your experience sounds fine. Many SIPA GRADS are desperately trying to get the kind of opportunities you already have. In this market I think it's worth holding on to a good job unless you really hate your life.

i know both are good jobs and i do feel lucky.

but they're not what i want to do for a career.

I'm aiming for IMF, UN and Intl organizations like those.

i really need to make a decision as soon as possible. it's hard to turn either of the jobs down.

what about GMAT or GRE?

i can probably get a better score in GMAT. if to take GRE instead, will have to spend much more time.

and thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry can't give you any advice there. You could take both and share the better score if you are really obsessive

Why would SIPA graduates want to work in commercial banking or an accounting firm? If that was their desire prior to enrolling at SIPA, why not go back to school for a traditional MBA?

At least at an MBA school, employers can expect graduates to be relatively well-versed on financial statement analysis and accounting. This is not necessarily the case at an international relations program. I never really understood why someone would want to get an international relations degree when he/she would like to go into I-banking or management consulting.

My response was intended for the other individual. He/she stated that you already have the type of background that SIPA graduates seek.

I suppose you're right. Nevertheless many people who want to work in consulting/finance do go to programs like SIPA

Grad schools like SIPA are full of people who have left good jobs because they're board idealize some kind of work they're not doing. SO they quit their decent job, go to school, come out getting paid the same or less doing a new job that - surprise, surprise - sucks just as much as what they were doing beforehand.

I guess I have no control over other people's decisions but I know I will go back to school for an IR degree for the right reasons. Graduate school is an expensive endeavor. People should do some research and comparison shopping before they seek an advanced degree.
