(a) An education in a top American university is a treasured experience which anyone living in modern times should aspire for.
(b) If you are from the third world the UN raises its nose and sniffs, unless you have a recognizable degree .....from a western university. I know thats not totally true but I've known a lot of colleagues who dont even get a call as a UN V!

(b) An opportunity to study theory of conflicts,especially ethnic ones, and peacekeeping. (c) Arrive at the path where my experience and background can make the difference. (d) An opportunity to meet people in an international setting.15 years of sitting on various mountain and jungle tops tends to make you a bit of the proverbial frog in the well, even if you do have an MSc in defence and Strategic studies!! But I'm absolutely open to advice, especially with respect to the choice of university and particular course.

Does the UN require that you have the analytical skills you're describing? Is there a specific job description that mentioned being able to analyze interstate and intrastate conflicts? I've read UN job descriptions and they're pretty vague and award points for work experience. Plus they have specific types of requirements like knowledge of SPSS, Microfit or Java programming, so how would what your describing polish your resume?
The UN has offices throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, etc., so you can get a job in Geneva as easily as the US.

I think 2 decades of counterinsurgency experience is on a whole different level from "American university". But if you learn to speak the lingo of the academics maybe you can have more influence and prevent the policy-makers from making the mistakes they have made in the past. |
