emphasis? i was going to do a phd in anthropology or sociology, was interested in theory, especially, but i don't think i have what it takes at the moment.

i work in policy currently, and was wondering if there is such a thing as somewhat practical degree (perhaps MPP or MPA or something of the sort) that emphasizes social/anthropological theory, ethnography, as opposed to learning STATA or something. Please, please HALP.

do a phd in soc. lots of theory, can specialize in ethnography and still do policy.

thanks for responding. although my initial plan was to do a phd in anthropology or sociology, i have never been published and don't have 'substantial' research experience. i was really hoping i could get away with a masters degree that is somewhat practical and critical? please advise!

practical and critical is tough...how much and what kind of theory do you want? I've heard some urban planning programs get into theory and they are certainly practical...

ethnographic training is very practical training unless you are going to be an academic/do academic research....

the practicality part would be getting a 1-2 year degree that would further my employment prospects (as a think tank paper pusher at the moment).

the theory part... just a sprinkling of your username/gramsci/foucault/bourdieu or something would suffice. thanks...

Is it a master's program? If so, maybe you could use it as a bridge toward a doctorate in public policy area, especially if you have a strong quant background. There will be literally no academic position opening in the field of "philosophy of public policy." But you'll find tons of jobs out there in "public policy" per se, which usually requires a job candidate to be well-versed in empirical, not speculative or humanistic, research methods.

If you pursue a philosophy doctorate with that concentration, you would have to choose other subfields as your, perhaps, minor of the doctorate (if this is possible) such as philosophy of (social) science, etc, for which there are "some" jobs.

1. Yes, it's an Msc in Philosophy and Public Policy (note: not "of").

2. I have no interest in learning about or doing quant/statistical analyses.

I am just looking for a way to integrate my interests, which are theoretical and academic, with the very low probability of going into and making it in academia
