Just see the descriptions of the job postings you are interested in. Some jobs prefer work experiences to any degree. It is your call to determine whether it is a waste of time, though in my opinion it would be a waste of both time and money, unless you are interested in academia (moving on to further advanced degrees). Also EU citizenship might be necessary for any EU-related positions.

The people I knew in that department have mostly gone on to good jobs. Of course it helps to have relevant experience before going in. I think the department is number one in the UK.
