I'm applying for the NSF Grad Research Fellowship (like so many other people) in Political Science and I was wondering if anyone knows how many people apply for Political Science fellowships. I know that last year, 8 people got it and 23 got honorable mentions, but I can't find the number of PoliSci applicants. Does anyone know?
Also, I've heard that getting the Fellowship helps one's chances of admission ... but how can that be true, since Fellowships aren't announced until March/April, which is right around when Departments announce decisions?

having the nsf in hand can sway WLs and in some instances even convince a dept to overturn rejections. but yea, it usually comes way to late in the process to make much of a difference.
apps/awards stats are listed somewhere but last year was flukey since ppl applied for a set number of slots then they dramatically increased the number of awards offered (a level they are maintaining this year).
