Subject: Joseph Korbel School

Hi all,

I'm looking to go to a school that has a good human rights program, preferably one that focuses more on advocacy/investigation in the practical arena rather than theory. Anyway, I'm hoping for SIPA, but my quant score was like a 610 and I wasn't great in econ as an undergrad so I think that's a long shot. I worked for Human Rights Watch for three years so the hope is that work experience will get me over the hump but I think it's unlikely.

Anyway, I got into the University of Denver, Joseph Korbel School today and I was wondering if anyone knows much about it. It was ranked in the top ten for IR programs a few years ago, but does anyone know if the human rights program is good and whether it has a decent alumnus network? I feel a little like this is a hoop I have to jump through, but it's an expensive one, so I don't want to drop 80 g's on something that's just a slip of paper. Thanks!

Yes, I got into SAIS years ago and still didn't go. Anyone with a brain can do the math -- $80k+ debt and $45k starting salary doesn't add up.

actually being interested in what you do for a living is important to some people. maybe you are lucky in that you have varied interests, and finance is one of them, but not everybody thinks the way you do. for some people the debt/low-paying entry-level work are not prohibitive factors.

Agree with ShamWoW. I'm currently in finance, making 75k. I'm waiting to hear back on my IR applications because I'm tired of working in the private sector, helping make rich people even richer. It's just not enjoyable any more.

With that being said, the first few years out of school may be tight, but it's worth it.

1.) The people drawn to non-profit work and international affairs are always an eclectic bunch.

2.) Benefits at NGOs are usually very generous.

3.) This nonsense about people making $30-40k for the rest of their lives is just that, nonsense. Friends of mine in NYC and DC in this sector are making between 60-80k after 2-4 years. Why? The non-profit sector learned quite some time ago that they need to be competitive with the private sector to entice people to hire on.

But, the school/environment does matter. Just getting a degree is not beneficial if you're not in an area that offers good networking or internships. I would be very hesitant to go to an IR program anywhere but in New England.

titcr. your typical nyc lawyer or finance drone can't wrap his/her mind around this, though. they don't realize that NGOs operate more like big companies than true nonprofits (and, in fact, many, like the one i work for, have for-profit divisions). they think that people graduate from these programs and work for the corner battered women's shelter, making 25k with no benefits. it's just not the case.

*edit: looking at the exchange below, you would be unnecessarily narrowing your options by only looking in NE (not sure how simply being in NE makes a school more attractive than WWS, SAIS, or even SIPA). you're basically saying that you would only look into fletcher and maybe KSG for iDev.

Hesitant to go to an IR program anywhere but in New England?? What?? What the hell is there in New England? And the only reputable one there is Tufts.

If you're going to come up with geographic BS, at least say something that sounds legit (i.e. DC or bust).

What I said was perfectly legit if you would stop to think about it before replying.

Why would I say New England? Because that area boasts the largest population of international non-profits and governmental organizations. Now, why is that important? The networking and internship opportunities in these areas are almost as important, in my opinion, as the formal education itself.

New England also boasts the top schools in IR.

Happy now?

Once again talking out of your ass. Thanks for confirming it.

Largest population of intl. non-profits and gov't organizations? Yeah, not DC or NY. New England.

And Fletcher is a school, not schoolS.

You know what? You're right. I was talking out of my ass b/c I wasn't specific enough. I didn't mean someplace like Bangor, Maine or other out of the way places. I was trying to convey NY, DC and Boston in one term, but New England was too vague. Thanks for pointing that out, and I'll work on being more specific in the future.

But, I still disagree with you that Tufts is the only good school out there. Columbia, Georgetown, George Washington, John Hopkins: all of these can get you to the same place as Tufts.

Cheers

no they totally do lots. they consume tons of tacky bullshit, repulse everyone who ever has to interact with them (except for their wealthy clients, of course), and become increasingly bitter as time goes on and they realize they hate their jobs, colleagues, lives, and selves. luckily they're often not smart enough to realize what they missed out as far as human connections and cultural experiences go.

i'm kidding (kind of). i know many great lawyers...although most of the happy ones work in public service or for non-profits. i'm just taking a wild swing at which one this guy is ^.

mcruse, no financial aid...and boy is it expensive. i think it's worth the investment. don't get freaked out that you didn't hear yet, i know sometimes it takes until the end of the month for them to notify. good luck!!
