Ha,

That's what you get for going to grad school rather than getting a job. I hope you are not majoring in TTT "IR" like most people on this board or things will only get worse as you make 35k per year the rest of your life.

To answer your question, though, you can save money by eating at happy hours around the city, snacking on samples at places like Whole Foods, eating falafel, etc.

Doing a Google search I found a few sites about saving money in NYC and some articles and tips.

This one is a whole site dedicated to the subject:

http://www.CheapInTheCity.com

This is an article by the New York Times

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=health&res=9D0CE7DE1530F93BA35757C0A967958260

There is a book I once saw named The Cheap Bastard's Guide to NYC, which shows places which have deals to save money.

Then again, you could always take off those Birkenstocks and get a job!

get a job. just the fact that you are working will save you money since you have less free time, that's how it works for me. Teachings not like that though - it's like a part-time job..

Seems to be semi RIP. I know a shit ton of ibankers who lost their job and had to move back home or out of NYC. Some of the top gunners should make it through, but I think the whole models and bottles ibanker salary is over with Obama and all the middle-class being pissed about corporate salaries.

Let them hang!

it is only in passing. The people who would generally move through the industry quickly are gone and people will still seek it out. Perhaps ones who are better suited to it in the first place..

When I was in college I saved a ton by cooking my own food. I'd eat pretty darn well, considering. Just stay away from the late night delivery options. You'll regret it the next day.

Oh, and make sure you pre-game before going out to the bars on weekends.

How about, drink water from the tap and not from a bottle? NYC water from the tap is pretty darn good, as long as the pipes in your building are not 100 years old...

I constantly run into people in DC and NY that tell me "drink the tap water it's fine". At the same time I have gotten letters from the city - at two different addresses - telling me the lead content of the water is way over the federal limit.

NY actually has functioning infrastructure. It's DC that's the third-world shithole.

I second what the other poster said about moving to Astoria. Or move to Inwood. Or Sunnyside. Or Jackson Heights.

Subject: Sunnyside

Hi, I am not familiar with NY so please forgive me if this is a naive question but I was wondering if I would be able to find a studio for $1,500/month in Sunnyside. Is this relatively close to the city center where I can easily commute for work or school? Please let me know. Thanks.

For $1500 you could get a decent studio on the upper east side or even downtown in the village. I've seen a number of smaller studios go for $1,350 per month in the 70's on the upper east side. Very nice area.

In Sunnyside, you could get a very decent 1 bedroom for that price. Yes, you could get to work quick. There are a number of subway stops.

You can actually get a nice place if you live in Harlem. And Harlem is not that bad these days. Give it 10 more years and it will be full of yuppies.

Subject: Harlem? Bitch, please.

Don't move to Harlem. It's the most dangerous neighborhood in Manhattan.

If you want to live uptown, go to Washington Heights or Inwood. The rents are cheaper, the neighbors are less likely to mug you, and you might even find a bigger, nicer apartment (especially in Inwood.) If you're already prepared to live at 145th, another 35 blocks or whatever on the A train isn't going to kill you.

Or live in Astoria/LIC. Or Jackson Heights (if you can rent someone's co-op in one of the prewar garden buildings, you will be STYLING.) The safer, nicer parts of Brooklyn have sadly become a ghetto for trust fund douchebags in $450 ripped jeans, so skip it. To find a decent, affordable place in Brooklyn you have to schlep off to Sunset Park or someplace else that will be far, crappy, and quite probably overguidoed.
