Depends on where you are applying. For Oxbridge and LSE, an upper second class honors is usually between a 3.6-3.8 at places like Harvard College. Otherwise, you would need a first, basically at or near at 4.0, if you went to went to somewhere regional like Boston College.

But, if you are applying to go to one of the run of the mill University of London schools like Royal Holloway or Goldsmith's, a 2:1 is going to be like a 3.3-3.7 from any middling US college or university. Personally, I know someone who went to SOAS wih below a 3.0 from Northwestern, because British schools are simply desperate for fee paying foriegners.

I went to Royal Holloway and University of Virginia for master's in the same discipline and UVA was significantly better. Even the Graduate Center of the City University of New York is better.

That said, the British are only so desperate and the programs were a lot smaller than Cash Cow programs like at NYU or Columbia. The programs are genuine academic programs, too, not like NYU, Columbia, UPenn invented fake liberal M.A. where you get back door admissions through the Continuing Ed program.

I'm doing a fully-funded master's at UCL and graduated with a 3.3 from a t50 public, too. I was under the impression that a 2:1 begins at around the 3.2-3.3 mark, but I could be wrong -- especially if you're taking ranking of the UG into account. But as another poster said, the U of L schools are all pretty happy to admit fee-paying foreigners, regardless of UG performance.

lolwut?

surely the answer to the OP depends on the major. in the humanities or social sciences, 35th percentile would be equivalent to a low 2.1

eh i know the general guideline applying from HYP was a 3.3 or so is fine for ~ 2:1 equiv. but there were a number of folks with MUCH lower gpa's who went on to read history and whatnot at oxbridge.

I studied in both systems. The British would like you to believe that a 3.6+ from an elite institution is equal to upper second class and that a 4.0 is equal to first class. The truth is that the cutoff is probably alot closer to a 3.3 or 3.4 from a good solid T50 for upper second equivalent.

2:1 starts at 61 / 70 at UCL, which is a low B.
