If all goes well over the next two weeks, I will have the incredibly fortunate opportunity of choosing from the following fantastic schools: Harvard Business School, Wharton, MIT-Sloan (all interviewed, still waiting for response - very good feeling about HBS and Wharton), Harvard Kennedy School (still waiting), SAIS (admitted yesterday to Int'l Development program). I'm hoping a ding or two might make my choice a little easier to make, but hypothetically, I'd just like your take on which of these established joint MBA/MPP-IR programs you think would be the best (in no particular order):

HBS/HKS, Wharton/HKS, MIT-Sloan/HKS or Wharton/SAIS

Coming from a BA in political science, I am really looking for a background that is going to give me solid quant, give real relevance to the study of business and government, and allow for fantastic networking. I'm also more partial to a program that would allow me to shift between two universities (which steers me away from HBS/HKS only for that reason), but this is just one preference of many.

Many thanks, and only serious takers please :-)

Not that it is of any relevance, but for credibility's sake, a brief of my profile from another forum:

Fine, but only because I like AUB. I'd say go HBS/HKS, if you want to shift between universities, there are opportunities to cross-register courses at schools like Fletcher, Sloan, etc too.

SAIS is quant heavy, so if that's a real priority for you then HBS/SAIS or Wharton/SAIS makes sense. For what it's worth, I'd rather divide my time between Boston and DC, and not have go to PA either.

just wanted to respond quickly to the cross-registration comment. the cross-registration makes sense only within harvard schools and mit. fletcher is too far from harvard and pretty tough logistically to fit into your schedule if your other classes are at busy times...you just won't be able to get there and get back easily. also, next year all harvard schools will be on a coordinated calendar making it even easier to register withing harvard...but that calendar coordination doesn't include fletcher and mit.

Thanks for the feedback. Does anybody know whether an HBS/SAIS option is possible? I imagine SAIS would have no problem from its end, but HBS would? I think HBS/SAIS would be a dream combination, if I were to be accepted to HBS :-)

I am a current PhD student at Harvard, and if I were picking, the choice would clearly be between HBS/HKS and Wharton/SAIS (I am happy to give you my personal email and tell you why in more detail; there are probably many other dimensions not mentioned in your criteria anyway). Since you mentioned, you were interested in a solid quant preparation, SAIS is more quantitative than HKS (unless you are going to the MPA/ID program). Networking...tough call, I'd say about the same. But the Harvard name is the Harvard name. Altogether, it is a tough call but you yourself mention that you want to shift between two universities, so in that case I'd go for Wharton/SAIS.

both HBS and HKS digned my *ss. Got into Wharton, MIT and SAIS-IDEV. Wharton/SAIS is a dream combination, but have a brand-fascination with H.

Is it completely stupid to go to Sloan and apply to Kennedy in my first year there? I feel I'd be shooting myself in the foot...

Particularly no if you want to work outside the U.S. The only place where HKS is better than SAIS is for domestic policy. I suppose if you want to do domestic alternative energy policy or something then you could maybe justify Sloan/HKS over Wharton/SAIS IFF you had an offer in hand from all components.

From an Sloan alumnus who married a chick from HBS and has lots of friends from Wharton...I cannot recommend Sloan, esp given your Wharton option and comment about the importance of a network. MIT has many, many positive traits, but given your interest in politics and IR, I don't think MIT will give you the network you are looking for (stereotypes sometimes have roots in facts--if you were interested in tech entrepreneurship, my recommendation would be different). Go to Wharton!
