Assuming one had a year - which course of action would best help a student's chances of getting accepted to a top IR program?

1) Go abroad and teach English/study a language

2) Take econ classes

3) Take IR classes at TTT/City college?

4) Get an IR related internship/job?

5) Some combination of the above?

Here's what I did... I went abroad to teach English while I studied for the GRE/GMAT and earned some cash to pay for econ classes.

Came back and got an IR related job while I took econ classes.

all of these matter very little. being interesting and being genuinely interested in IR will get you furthest.

learning a language will help get in somewhat, teaching wont. econ will help you when accepted, but not really with acceptance. TTT IR classes, LMAO. 4 would be solid of course, but not like "ZOMG, he interned for a summer at a TT think tank, let's take him!!!"

get some sort of good work experience that will make you marketable once you graduate, since they'll prefer to admit people who can get good jobs afterward. so i guess 4.
