Subject: Chances at UCLA's J.D./M.A. Program

I was wondering what my chances were for UCLA's Joint Degree J.D./M.A. Program in Afro-American Studies.

Currently, I'm a junior at Amherst College, with a 3.5 G.P.A. (which will go up a notch at the end of this semester), Black Studies major, a LOT of work experience in a completely unrelated field (museums), not a lot of community involvement.

Do you think writing a thesis would help? Or should I take graduate school courses while in undergrad?

In most of these joint JD/MA programs I believe that the main admission criteria you will be judged on is your suitability for the JD (This will be the bulk of your coursework). To that end, your GPA is ok, just make sure to rock your LSATs (look at UCLA's avg numbers). With that being said, make sure you really actually want to be a lawyer. Ive seen too many people want to study xyz studies and simply tack on a law degree because of the "prestige" or (arguably) "marketable skill." For a program like this it should be the opposite - you really want to be a lawyer, and want to supplement that with afro-american studies.

I think you have a better chance doing WGWAG studies. UCLA has a good rep for that.

Chances are difficult to judge without an LSAT score. It is central to any admissions decision in law. 25% - 75% GPA for UCLA admitted students: 3.49 - 3.87. Your GPA is in range, particularly if you bring it up next year, but it won't stand out. Undergrad institution is by most accounts a trivial if not irrelevant factor in law selection.

CA schools allegedly are prohibited from using affirmative action, so you won't get the boost there you would at most other schools in the country. LSAT 25-75% range is: 164-169.
