Subject: No problem...

I've lived in the area (Hamra) before and it's totally safe. I've also known many jews who have studied at AUB and I don't recall hearing any problems. Things only get sticky when all hell breaks loose in Lebanon, like in July 2006 or May 2008. I assume you intend to study Arabic there, in which case I wouldn't recommend it. Beirut is fantastic city to live in and the quality of life is great if you have the $$. However, AUB is an English language university and most people around the campus will speak English (even the guy flipping burgers at the McDonald's across from the AUB gate). When you meet a Lebanese you'll have a fleeting opportunity to stammer out a few sentences in Arabic before he/she begins speaking to you in fluent English. This is less true outside of the AUB area and you'll have to speak Arabic if you spend significant time in the mountains. I generally recommend Damascus over Beirut for serious Arabic study. That said, Beirut is a great town and much more enjoyable than Damascus.

Campus has a great location overlooking the ocean and the students are hot. I tried going into the library to get some studying done and was too distracted by the ocean panorama and the perfect 10s among the student body to even open my book. As for being jewish, I would definitely keep that too yourself in Beirut. You'll probably be safe, but it's important not to draw attention to yourself

I was actually an undergrad student there, and loved the experience. I am originally Lebanese and have lived much of my life in the Arab world, but spent a good part of in the US, where I was born, and was educated in an American system throughout.

The campus, the girls, and the incredible access to speakers, politicians and academics of the Middle East, right in the middle of where the action is (if MidEast politics is your interests) make Beirut and AUB the place to be. As for nightlife, absolutely amazing.

Regarding safety, as irstudent23 said, it is completely safe (except for force majeur instances in 2006 and 2008), and you will almost never have an issue. Robberies and muggings are truly unheard of. No kidding, most of my "international" friends (non-Lebanese) who were predominantly American, recall it to me as one of the best times in their lives, and come back often. I actually had two American Jewish friends at AUB who came for a semester/year abroad - one studying at McGill and another at Princeton. One of them was very vocal about his background, the other sort of kept it at bay unless someone probed her about her Jewish sounding last name. We've also had a couple of American Jewish professors teach at AUB, including Prof. Marcy Newman and another English lit prof. whose name escapes me at this moment. I don't think they ever had a problem, but I would surely steer clear of making any ostentatious pro-Israeli statements in class or anything like that...But surely, el_lobo is right, you probably don't want to be advertising your religious background either, but you shouldn't do that regardless of your background, wherever you are :-)

Don't get me wrong, AUB leaves much to be desired, but if you want a real taste for Middle East politics and culture in a cosmopolitan city with amaaaazing nightlife, Beirut is the place to be. Some of my American friends who were looking for wider Arabic language options than offered at AUB went to Universite Saint Joseph, a 10-min. taxi ride to Achrafieh.

I'd be happy to discuss further - if you're interested, I can send you my details.
