For the Petermans of the world, they're only paying ~24% on the majority of a $100k gain. If they haven't already taken some profit then I don't see how long term cap gains tax would be too much of a catalyst when all of their gains - equivalent to like 30 years of shrewd savings and investment returns - could vanish overnight.
