I had a bunch of attempted buys that failed for no apparent reason on ED. Eventually, I did buy some PFR, but only 1.5 ETH worth.

I'm looking at my ledger nano s now, and I have a ton of charges for 0.00105 ETH. 7 in total. I guess every time you do anything on that POS site, it charges you money.

Another tip: Transfer all the coins in your etherdelta MEW to a separate MEW that you don't connect to any exchange. hackers may be able to access your MEW's private key if it was connected to an exchange.

according to this article, it's possible - and happened:

why take the risk? if you have $$$ invested in coins, just pay the $25 in ETH or whatever to relocate it

Hardware wallet is credited. As I have noted, it seems like you could h4x into some random bro's MEW by just typing in random characters in the private key field.

If you are that scared then you should probably cash out a %. Getting h4xed seems far more likely. Safety deposit box doesn't seem like a bad idea. Just spread out the risk some, so you don't kill yourself if shtf. MEW seems completely unsafe to me.... I'd rather have my ETH on Gemini where the Winkelvosses are at least incentivised to protect their reputations.

You get a new one and put in a 24 word recovery passphrase. That's how the Ledger works anyway.

it looks like the etherdelta hack is even easier because it used the custom token name feature and made the name a piece of javascript that read his keys. is this just a metamask thing where it makes your keys available like that? seems unsafe to leave metamask installed in chrome

Point is of course ED is a disaster, but MEW seems like literally I, a liberal artist, can just type in random keys, get lucky, and crack into someone's wallet, at which point I will transfer all of their ETH to myself and be like, "haha." Tell me I'm wrong. If it at least made you type in the wallet # together with the private key, it would be almost completely impossible to do this.

Not targeting a specific person. Just generating random keys and getting lucky. An Engineer could write a program that could do this automatically, for hours. Eventually could they might just hit gatormo's wallet and transfer it to themselves with zero consequence? If every h4xer in the world isn't doing this they're insane.

how long would it take to try all the combinations in a key that big? is there a lockout timer for failed attempts

How could there be a lockout timer when there is no username to lock? If there is one it could only be tied to the browser/instance. Maybe the IP address although that would be highly unlikely. So close the browser and reopen, rinse and repeat.

I'm confused by this: As I have noted, it seems like you could h4x into some random bro's MEW by just typing in random characters in the private key field.

Has this happened? I thought most of the MEW "hacks" were just victims of phishing?

Tell me I'm wrong.

Go to "View Wallet Info"

Click "Private Key."

Type in random characters. Get lucky. Maybe an Engineer or a Maths person can confirm this, but it seems like it would only take a few thousand tries to get a hit. Try it with your own private key, but just change the last character to a 7 or something. It will act like you've succeeded at logging in, but what you're probably looking at isn't a wallet proper that someone signed up with, but just some shit that's "reserved" and could, at some point, be used if someone registers and that private key is the key assigned to them.

Every private key is the same number of characters btw. Which makes this even easier.

Does EtherDelta actually get those fees? I assumed all the wasted gas fees simply went to the Ethereum network/miners. In concept, ED doesn't get anything from a transaction, because it is direct exchange with the other buyer/seller, which is why a smart contract is needed.

I actually have no idea how ED makes money. Perhaps that is why they are having and ICO and also trying to charge a 1-3% premium on new coin listings.

Some of the registration required exchanges, on the other hand, are making a fuckton charging .25% transaction fees and .01 ETH to transfer off the exchange.
