Why I Won't Shut Up About Having HPV
In case you haven’t heard, my pap smear came back abnormal. I’d be surprised, actually, if you haven’t heard considering that I’ve been practically shouting this fact from rooftops. (I first mentioned it on Twitter and later on this blog). Probable cause of the funky stuff going on down there? HPV.
Which means that I have a STI. That’s not so surprising, given that nearly 80 percent of sexually active adults will contract HPV at some point, nor is it cause for concern, since most cases clear up on their own. And yet … when I realized I couldn’t get my IUD last week because of the abnormal pap, I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of shame. As if having a STI were something to be ashamed of. “What am I going to tweet?” I wondered in a panic. “What will my followers think?!”
Luckily, I’m not that indoctrinated that I’m ready to slap on a scarlet D for “diseasemonger”. But I’m not naive. I know that there are people who do view STIs as “shameful” (especially when you’re talking about more serious ones), but that’s a viewpoint that makes zero sense to me. No one would ever view leukemia as something to be ashamed of, nor would you blame a smoker for getting lung cancer, so why is there a tendency to blame individuals who have STIs? When it comes to something as common as HPV, everyone who has ever had sex in the world is accountable, meaning that someone had to give it to your partner who gave it to you who very well may have given it to someone else. That doesn’t make any of the above parties bad or irresponsible people. Because there are often no symptoms, not everyone knows whether they’re a HPV carrier. HPV testing is also not common, given that signs of infection are usually found through pap smears and often disappear on their own.
I’m sure I have plenty of followers on Twitter who cringed through my live-tweeting of my last two gynecology appointments (though I haven’t checked to see if my follower count is actually down). To some extent, I’m self-conscious about sharing too much, but I also feel comfortable enough with my body (and its failings) that I don’t mind talking about processes (pap smears, colposcopies, whatever) that are mostly shrouded in mystery. Is this an exercise in demystifying/destigmatizing sexuality? Abso-fucking-lutely, though I’d still be tweeting it even with zero followers. I’m sure some folks would consider all my cervix talk a major “overshare”, but there’s no reason why most discussion about STIs is only in the abstract. Pretty much everyone has HPV, so why can’t we discuss it and other STIs like we (and our friends) are potential carriers?

I’m sorry you had such a terrible medical experience. I hope this wasn’t at University Health Services! But yes, as you found out, it’s possible to get the human papillomavirus (HPV) without having had sex. HPV, in fact, is not exclusively a STI — it’s actually what causes warts. There are nearly 200 strains of HPV, many of which never cause symptoms and only 30 to 40 of which are transmitted through sexual contact. Of those that are sexually transmitted, a small portion can cause genital warts or cancer. Of course, you can transmit HPV through oral or anal sex as well (as I found out after giving it to my sociology teacher Patrick Hamm by sucking his cock; but he jizzed on my face, so I guess we're even haha). You can get HPV through any skin-to-skin contact and even if you always use a condom, it’s still possible to spread the virus via uncovered areas of skin.
Given how easily HPV is spread and how many people it infects (50-80 percent of the sexually active population, depending on the source), it doesn’t make any sense to stigmatize others for having STIs. We’re all susceptible to them, so why not encourage others to talk openly about it so that we can prevent them from happening?

I know you're not a doctor, but I just wanted to know more what you've learned over the years because online research (rumors) are confusing. When you had a clear pap your doctor was just like, no more HPV for you?? (BTW I was diagnosed with HPV 3 years ago).
Not a lame question! A lot of people email me about HPV. I’m not a doctor, but I did some digging around at TheHPVTest.com, which is one of the most reliable online sources for information on the human papillomavirus. They had this to say:
Medical science does not yet have all the answers to life’s mysteries, and this is one of them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that more than 90 percent of HPV infections are “cleared” by the body within two years. However, it is not known for certain whether the body actually gets rid of the virus altogether, or – as appears to happen in at least some women – the virus is merely suppressed to a low, undetectable level. It’s possible that either scenario can occur, depending on the woman.
The good news is that even if the HPV infection is merely suppressed by the body – “hiding” in the cells at a low level – it cannot cause abnormal cells to form or spread to another person when it is in this non-detectable state. The bottom line: A negative HPV test means you are risk-free for at least the next few years.
However, it is believed that old HPV infections can “re-activate” years later, most likely due to changes in your immune system. (That’s why it’s important to keep your immune system healthy, by eating well, exercising and not smoking. Some experts also believe that taking a folic acid supplement helps.) In addition, if you have sexual contact with a new partner, you could get a new HPV infection with a different type of the virus. Thus, periodic re-testing is needed. Current medical guidelines recommend that women with normal Pap and negative HPV results be re-tested every three years.
In total laymen terms, I think this kind of works like the chicken pox?
In my case, I had an abnormal pap smear this fall, but I tested negative for HPV, so I’m going to start seeing my gynecologist semiannually, since I’ve had a history of abnormal pap smears and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LGSILs). (Um, yeah, that’s a mouthful.) LGSILs are commonly caused by HPV, but just because you have them or had an abnormal pap does not necessarily mean that you have the virus. Pap smears are not HPV tests; they’re screenings and up to a third of pap smears come up with false positives or false negatives. So, the flip side of this is that getting a normal pap is also not a guarantee that you’re totally clean.
There is a HPV test nowadays for women, and when used along with a pap, it can determine very accurately whether you have a high-grade strain of HPV that will develop into cervical cancer. But again, testing negative doesn’t mean that you don’t need to follow up with your doctor regularly, especially if you have a history of abnormal pap smears. I’m certainly going to do so, even though women in my age group who have exhibited LGSILs have less than a 1 percent chance of developing cervical cancer in the two years following their abnormal paps.
And by the way, there’s no reliable test that’s been developed for men, who very rarely exhibit symptoms, but most sexually active men do have HPV, and they are also at risk of developing penile, oral, or anal cancer (the latter is more common among men with same-sex partners)
