The NALP directory lists law firm information as of February 1, 2009. But right now, it's early October, 2009. What law firms have had a significant number of associates "disappear" in the last 8 months?

Certainly, some laid off associates before February 1. And some have "deferred" associates, or given them a year off. Others may have left voluntarily. Still others may have been elevated to partner. And some have already started incoming associates.

But could we notice any significant trends? Here's a look at the home offices for the Vault 25. (Caution: firms may classify "associate" differently for NALP than on its own Web site, among other factors.)

VAULT. OFFICE (CITY): FEB 1 to CURRENT, TOTAL CHANGE, % CHANGE

1. Wachtell (New York): 127 to 117, -10, -8%

2. Cravath (New York): 355 to 365, +10, +3%

3. Skadden (New York): 642 to ~425*, -217, -34%

4. S&C (New York): ~351** to 292, -59, -17%

5. DPW (New York): 442 to 372, -70, -16%

6. Weil (New York): 500 to 402, -98, -20%

7. STB (New York): 510 to ~425*, -85, -17%

8. Cleary (New York): 336 to 310, -26, -8%

9. Covington (DC): 227 to ~200*, -27, -12%

10. Kirkland (Chicago): 384 to 325, -59, -15%

11. W&C (DC): 119 to ~115*, -4, -3%

12. Debevoise (New York): 379 to ~335*, -44, -12%

13. Paul Weiss (New York): 376 to ~308*, -68, -18%

14. GDC (LA): inc.

15. Sidley (Chicago): 310 to 247, -63, -20%

16. WilmerHale (DC): 256 to ~90*, -166, -65%

17. Latham (LA): 221 to 152, -69, -31%

18. A&P (DC/McLean): 246 to 208, -38, -15%

19. Jones Day (DC): 108 to 98, -10, -9%

20. White & Case (New York): 317 to ~190*, -127, -40%

21. Shearman (New York): 357 to ~220*, -137, -38%

22. OMM (LA): 152 to ~80*, -72, -47%

23. Quinn Emanuel (all): inc.

24. Ropes (Boston): 353 to ~315*, -38, -11%

25. Hogan (DC): 281 to 210, -71, -25%

[I double-checked the numbers on WilmerHale, but someone else can correct me if I made a mistake.]

* estimated count from Web site entries

** estimated count from NALP form

Thoughts? Errors? Thanks.

Wilmer is off. They have a separate category for "senior associates." Also I'd doublecheck your count.

Subject: Are those from the firm's website?

Because there are roughly 10-20 percent more people who are no longer working there or at the very least pretending to work there for the next three months.

All the firms with insanely high numbers are hand counts from the firms website. Oddly, that seems off.

Well this is weird... NALP shows 343 for Kirkland NY, and handcount on Kirkland's website shows 336. That's just a 2% drop.

Weren't there "layoffs" in that office a few weeks ago?

The problem with K&E numbers is that they promote people to "partner" as they finish their sixth year (income partner) which makes it look like more associates disappeared. So looking at total attorneys is probably more accurate. Unless we think they actually brought in a slew of partners while firing associates.

op qualified all of that.

also, atl reported that wilmerhale has a massive difference because of its internal "senior associate," which means that isnt as bad either

true. k&e promoted 51 associates to partner at the beginning of the month. 25 were in the chicago office. so the -59 number should really be -34 (9%).

Considering normal attrition is 20-25%, is it safe to say any firm above that might be in trouble?

Doesn't White and Case NY have over 100 summers waiting to start? I imagine it will go something like +50% in January, then -70% come March.
