I'm confused by your wardrobe.

- The shoes are garbage, especially the AE which are clunky, horrible looking garbage

- Why so many BB shirts instead of all MTM or Bespoke?

- I doubt your suit is "bespoke" if 50% of your 4 suit wardrobe is garbage like BR and HB. Also, depending on where you work, the RL Black may not be office appropriate.

- If you wear french cuffs 50% or more of the time you need more cufflinks to spice things up.

I don't buy shitty, cheap shoes, why would I know how much AE's cost? I would say pony up the cash for a pair of JM Westons, I don't expect him to cough up $1,600 for Lobb's, but the Weston's are great, not exorbitantly priced and will last for ages.

At $300 retail, Allen Edmonds are the best at their price point. For a few more dollars you can get a pair of Alden's. If you know your shoe size well enough, you might consider purchasing some English made shoes (think Grenson, Trickers, Crockett & Jones), but there is a big risk shopping online when you don't know your size.

Basically, you can't beat Allen Edmonds at that price point in the United States.

I don't think aldens are "garbage" no matter what scale you're judging them on.

I acquired my wardrobe over the course of law school and into my *now* first year as an attorney. As my tastes have refined and my budget increased, I have trended toward nicer quality. This explains the two shitty suits I own, which I am in the process of replacing. The bb shirts are also geting phased out by mtm.

Alden's are generally the better made shoe, but the non-blake stitched shoes in Santoni's Fatte a Mano line have the slight construction and materials edge.

As for C&J, I can't think of a better-made shoe at the $500 retail price point than their handgrade line. Sure, for a little bit more you can get something from Vass (which is far superior) and, if you are very patient, you can pick up a pair of Edward Greens at that price on deep discount, but if you are impatient and are paying retail, it is a great shoe.

It's not overpriced for the quality when you buy it when Bloomingdale's is having a 50% sale and you use other coupons you get in the mail and you open up a Bloomingdale's credit card, bringing the price down to well under $500 a suit.

This depends on the last the shoe is on. In Alden's, for example, someone who wears a 9 in the Barrie last will almost certainly take a 9.5 in the Plaza last. The differences are less dramatic in Allen Edmonds, but still pronounced. For example, an 8.5D in the 5 last (Park Avenue), is likely an 8E in the 0 last. The best thing to do is to actually go to the store and try stuff on in a number of different lasts until you get the right fit.

If I'm a BigLaw noob with no UG/LS debt, where should I drop my first $10k in wardrobe spending over the first year? Brands? Please include at least one off-the-rack suit recommendation and your favorite brand to blow $500 on dress shoes.

you can buy allen edmonds seconds for $130ish. buy two park avenues - one in black and one in brown. if you take care of them, they'll last you for years.

Dude, c'mon. I'm obviously pretentious. If I don't spend $500 on a pair of dress shoes, how am I supposed to respect myself in the morning?

Don't buy OTR suits, get a smaller # of suits made in basic colors/patterns.

How much is a custom suit, ballpark? I realize that's like asking, "how much is a baseball card worth?" But give me my options.

Cheapest made-to-measure options in New York will run you $800. Most expensive bespoke options will be in the neighborhood of $10K.

The idea that a custom suit is required for a good fit is pure hogwash. Try on a number of different OTR suits and take the best fitting one to a good tailor. Unless you are going to spend $1,500 on a suit, you will do better OTR with a good tailor.

The simple answer is try a bunch on by different makers. It depends a lot where you are located, but generally places with more than one brand are a better place to start (Century 21, for example). Where you go will depend on what you are looking to spend.

Don't trust the salesman, who will say everything fits, due trust your own eyes or those of someone who knows what they are talking about.

Try and avoid fashion brands (Hugo Boss, Armani, etc.) that charge more for made in china (or Mexico or Indonesia) crap.

Lol thanks for that tally. Most of my purchases have been made at a steep discount. Retail is for faggots.
