Hi, I've had several questions and worries; I've basically have been through several recent transitional phases in my life. In 9th and 10th grade, I had many social and family problems that arose from both moving from place to place and confronting my father's harsh anger problems. Frustrated, confused, and angry, I spent the first two years of my high school doing poorly in school to purposefuly "rebel" against my father's social expectations. My father, who works for the State Department, was recently assigned at a position at the Embassy in Iraq (Baghdad), so my family is currently stationed near DC. With my father gone, I really shaped up and stepped up to the plate. For once in my life, I felt like I had more control over my life and so I did do better in school. My 2.6 GPA in 9th and 10th grade changed to a 3.7 this year (junior). However, my cumulative GPA is still very low and I'm afraid although this upward trend won't really get me anywhere. I see myself as a late bloomer, and motivation has finally hit me but I realize the complicated situation I put myself in. Of course there are more things I can mention in my essay that may explain my poor GPA, but I am afraid I won't be able to get into the college I want to go to. UVA, Cornell, NYU, Carnegie Melon seem like far end reaches but I am determined to go there if possible. I took the old SAT just to see what it's like and did poorly on it because of bad health conditions, ending up with a mere 1210. I hope to compensate for my low GPA with a high SAT score and a persuasive essay, and this summer I have lots of plans: gaining volunteer hours at the Smithsonian Museum, getting a part-time technical job as a web designer in DC, and taking 2 or 3 college courses at a local college like George Mason or Marymount. Also, I'm studying for the new SAT's and am expecting a 2100 range. Would this score nullify my other bad, old SAT score? Could my SAT scores, essay, and upward GPA trend still give me a chance at the colleges of my choice? Any other suggestions or strategies would be most helpful!

Thanks,

Nicholas Chung

The only school you have a remote chance at getting into from that list is CMU. You will definitely need high scores to compensate. The problem with your case is the reasoning for your GPA. Motivation is not something colleges want to hear about.

Hello

I was just researching prestigious colleges such as Harvard, Yell, and Stanford. I would like to be admitted into one of them but their GPA requirement is about a 3.9. I have just completed my tenth grade year and I have a 3.85. I plan to raise my GPA to a that criterion but if i am unable to do that do you think this will defer my chance of being admitted? I do alot of activities. I have advance placement classes and am also about to get a scholarship for my sport in a couple of weeks. I plan to do well on the SAT's as well. If there is a chance, what should I do next school year to better my chance.

Thank-You

a concerned student

Yayle actually raised their GPA requirement to 3.92 for next cycle, so you better get those marks up a bit.

If you are recruited by any of those schools in a sport you do have a pretty good chance of being admitted; your GPA will be perfectly in range then. You still have to do fairly well on the SAT tests, but if so you should be fine.

Subject: Low GPA but High SAT

Hello! I have a 3.7 GPA and am in the top 25% of my class of 1300. Our school is super competitive, and I do admit to one C on my transcript, but the rest are high to mid b's and a few a's in unimportant courses, such as health etc. My SAT score is a 770 on the critical reading section and an 800 on the math section, but a 660 on the writing section. What are my chances at Berkeley or MIT or NYU? Can I at least get some sort of half-scholarship at Boston University or another reputable school? I want to major in the social sciences and go into premed...or advertising. (I know it's a broad range) I am also nationally ranked in Speech and have won numerous awards etc. My grades are low because of my time-consuming extra-curricular (speech) that has taken me to the Harvard Speech Tournament as well as several others. Do I stand a chance at an Ivy in any way?

Unfortunately, your choice of major (social sciences) typically requires a 3.95 or higher GPA (unweighted) at schools like Harvard, Yale, MIT, Boston University, etc. The field is very crowded there. Also, you will need a much higher math SAT score if you want to go into pre-med. Finally, are you in speech or debate? While debaters can usually get a boost of between 20-40% in admissions, speechies usually lose anywhere from 5-15%. I hope this helps.

Ignore Fifth Column Traitor.

Your low rank will hurt you quite a bit. You have a very slim chance at MIT, unless you have a more impressive EC list than you're letting on, autoadmit at NYU, and maybe somewhat competitive for Berkeley.

NYU and Berkeley will screw you out of financial aid, if you need it. If you want good aid, think about applying to some state schools--they'll throw money your way.

Yes, you have good chances at the lower Ivies.

Your advice could be pulled from any admissions booklet. I suspect the poster above already knew this, but wanted additional inside scoops. In that case, my advice is much more useful. Stop being a tool, leaf.

Subject: horrid GPA, good SAT

My high school GPA so far (i'm in the second marking period of junior year and didn't get my first marking period grades yet)is a 2.91 and my SAT score is a 2140 (800 in math, 690 in critical reading, and 650 in writing).

I am also in a very challenging magnet program and am currently taking integral calculus, honors biochem, and honors research which isn't available to other students here.

What are my odds of getting into a decent college?

I don't know if it matters or not but I'm of Indian decent and I've been on the varsity wrestling team since sophomore year.

You're going to be shut out of the best colleges, but there will be plenty of opportunities for you in schools intrigued by your aptitude. Having a strong upward trend will be in your favor. If your decline was recent or constant, that's bad.

I wouldn't sweat it much. If possible, try applying to your state school--you'll probably get a full ride from them.

Subject: Alternatives for admissions

I was also worried about my scores because i didn't do so well my first year but started to shape up about halfway through my sophomore year. Anyway, i just found out about this site called zinch.com and you get a profile (it's all free) that lets you put you and what you're about on there. It also links you to colleges you want to go to, straight to admissions, and you let them know you want to go to their school and they check out your profile (you can put on ECs, leaderships, jobs, blah blah) and test scores are just a side note. it's awesome for kids like me, i really want to get in a good school and this is all about being "more than a test score." I love it! check it out, seriously, it could totally help
