Yeah, the fact that its admin rate went so low because it started using the CommonApp means it's a better school now. Columbia is IN NO WAY at the level of HYP.

Non-Wharton Penn is not full of Columbia/Brown/Dartmouth rejects. You cannot assume this just because the admin rate is higher. Plenty of people would choose Penn over those 3, and especially over Dartmouth and Brown. In terms of objective academic strength of departments, your rating hierarchy is SPS.

Since everyone is pulling s**t out of their asses anyway, here's the real deal for undergrads:

1)Brown-Without a doubt the coolest school in the country.

2)Yale-The best politicians.

3)Princeton-Students with the most polished social graces.

4)Columbia,Harvard, Penn.-Full of Jewish and Asian strivers lacking social polish and class.

5)Cornell-The best engineering in the Ivy League.

wharton ug and harvard get the best finance recruiting, period. aside from the bulge bracket banks, you get the buyside firms like blackstone PE, apollo, SAC, silver lake, fortress, etc., that only recruit at those 2 schools.

for finance undergrad recruiting, the ivy ranking goes something like this:

harvard/wharton

princeton

yale

columbia

dartmouth

cornell

non-wharton penn

brown

for finance recruiting, yes. non-wharton penn kids get PWND because they're competing directly with their wharton counterparts for slots. also, the college at penn is considered as a joke among the elite finance firms.

dartmouth does place very well in finance and on a pure per capita basis it actually does better than yale. but overall, i think yale's name and connections still go further.

Are we only talking about undergraduate prestige here? Because if we are talking about prestige as a research university, H and Y absolutely pwn P. In fact, you could make a case for ranking C and P above P by that criteria. P focuses so much on undergraduate education that it isn't a great research university. The graduate programs that do exist at P tend to be very good, but overall they don't hold a candle to H or Y.

That is true, but if you look at metrics like the total number of government research dollars (which is usually the way the prestige of a research university is measured), P severely lags H and Y. Sure, the programs that they do have are excellent, they don't hold a candle to H or Y (or some of the other Ivies) as a research university.

Well no shit. That's why UCSF is one of the most prestigious schools in the country. A UCSF MD (or DDS) pwns just about any HYP graduate in any field, and even their other PhD programs are all pretty fucking credited. As a research university, UCSF absolutely pwns Princeton. Sure, Princeton may be top-ranked in math and philosophy and bullshit like that, but UCSF is much better in areas that are actually useful for humanity (which also means that people who study these subjects can find jobs). Most Princeton philosophy PhD's are just as fucked as philosophy PhD's from other schools even though Princeton is more highly ranked. Thus, I have a hard time considering Princeton to be as prestigious as Harvard or Yale or even UCSF.

1) Harvard (best overall)

2) Yale (most social prestige)

3) Princeton (the stepchild of HYP but still a member)

HUGE GAP

4) Columbia

5) Brown

6) Dartmouth

7) Penn (Wharton by itself would be above Columbia, below HYP)

8) Cornell

The only accurate way to rank is to break the rankings down into groups (groups make more sense than tiers because tiers is a stronger word and the difference between the last three groups isn't that significant; if you want to use tiers it makes more sense just to have the upper ivies(HYP) and the rest)

Group 1: Harvard, Yale, Princeton

Group 2: Columbia, Dartmouth

Group 3: Penn, Brown

Group 4: Cornell

If you're talking about finance recruiting, Wharton obviously has to be considered separately from Penn and would be with Harvard at the top. After that would come Princeton, Yale, Columbia, and Dartmouth with not a whole lot of difference between those and the rest would follow. Whoever suggested above that buyside jobs straight out of UG are only available out of Harvard and Wharton is an idiot; several graduates get buy-side out of YPCD plus a number of other target schools.

DPslut is correct. It's HYP and the rest.

LOL at anyone at Columbia or Penn who thinks they're superior to a Cornell or Dartmouth student.
