http://theinbetweenieavenger.tumblr.com/ask

I’ve been angry at my body for changing without notice, even though that’s something bodies do. I’ve been angry at my body because genetics have caught up with me and I’m starting to show precursors to both heart disease and type 2 diabetes, both of which run in my family. Like I said, I’m healthy now, and we may have caught things early enough to even prevent both. But It’s hard not to feel like there’s something wrong with me even if it’s not my fault.

But despite all of this, I can see how FA has changed my perspective. When I went to the doctor’s office last week and saw that the scale had finally inched up to 200 lbs. I wasn’t devastated. I once cried at the sight of 35 lbs. fewer, but I’m far less scared now of some numbers on a scale.

My birthday was last month and my mom gave me money to buy a nice, well made blazer because I’ve been wanting to up the ante at work (I’m a fellow now and would love to get hired on permanently by the end of the year). I finally found one the other day at Marshall’s. It’s gorgeous: white herringbone, four buttons, nipped in at the waist, Lauren by Ralph Lauren. And I didn’t even flinch that it was the size 16 that fit me best. I’ve spent most of my teens and twenties feeling that my variously size 8-12 body was inadequate. But here I am, two sizes larger than I’ve ever been in the past, and the world hasn’t ended. I’m just as worthy and worthwhile as I ever was. Maybe more, because now I know it, too.

http://theinbetweenie.tumblr.com/post/7071093279/on-the-positive-side

Hmmm…

Okay, yeah, maybe the metformin is affecting my appetite. I should want lunch by now. I think.

http://theinbetweenie.tumblr.com/post/7017210184/hmmm

Thinking out loud

Or in writing, I suppose. (Trigger Warning for some weight loss talk.)

It’s day two on metformin. Thankfully, I really don’t seem to be getting any major side effects and from what I can tell, I’d have felt them by now. I’m still only at a dose of 500 mg per day, which is sub-therapeutic, but since the side effects are negligible to nonexistent, it’s looking like I’ll be able to build up to 1500 (the minimum dosage considered therapeutic) fairly quickly. I’ve also (re)added fish oil and vitamin c supplements to my daily regimen in an effort to get my cholesterol and c-reactive protein (CRP) back to healthy levels.

I still think my doctor was premature in diagnosing me with metabolic syndrome, since I don’t quite fit the diagnostic criteria. It seems highly likely, though, that I do have some level of insulin resistance, which is what caused the 40 lb. weight gain over the past year and a half. Unfortunately, my insulin levels haven’t been tested recently, fasting or otherwise, so I have no idea if they’re normal or not.

I can’t help wondering if taking metformin will lead me to lose the weight I’d gained. I was comfortable 40 lbs. ago. I’d learned to accept my body the way it was - which was still “overweight” by BMI standards. It felt unfair that the moment I figured out how to say “I love and accept my body just the way it is” was the moment I started gaining what would turn out to be a significant amount of weight. It’s hard to know what will happen and ultimately, reducing my risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes (both of which do run in my family, among both thin and fat relatives alike - though I now wonder if the fatness is primarily insulin related) is my primary concern. Weight loss may be a part of that, since I haven’t found any indication that CRP can be effectively reduced without at least some weight loss. But maybe it’s not causal, and rather another side effect of changing the internal mechanisms that lead to elevated CRP.

And there you have my stream-of-consciousness ramble for the day.

Scared

I got my test results back. I’m a little confused, but more than that, I’m scared. I don’t have PCOS, but there’s something going on that shouldn’t be, especially not in an otherwise-healthy 27 year old woman.

1. My cholesterol is completely out of whack, which isn’t incredibly surprising because both my parents are on statins and have been for a while now. But the numbers are strange. My HDL is great (over 70), but my LDL and triglycerides, which have both always been ok, are suddenly very high and the total number is nearly 100 points higher than it was at this point last year. Usually people with PCOS or metabolic syndrome have high LDL and triglycerides, but low HDL. Mine is so high that my ratio is actually within a desirable range. Um, good? I’m still really uncomfortable that the LDL, triglycerides, and overall number are so high.

2. My C-Reactive Protein, which measures inflammation or infection in the body, is through the roof. The normal range is 1-3 mg/dl, though ideally it should be under 1. Mine isn’t just a bit high. It’s nearly 20 times what it should be. Although it’s an imprecise as a measurement of risk, c-reactive protein is considered a predictor for both diabetes and heart disease. I have a family history of both.

So, the good news: there was no fat shaming on my doctor’s part. She said that my high HDL (in conjunction with my self-reported lifestyle) indicated that I eat well and lead a fairly active life. She didn’t blame the fat and acknowledged that there is clearly some underlying health reason that has caused me to put on 40 lbs. in the past year and a half. She also reiterated that my fasting glucose readings mean that not only am I not diabetic (duh), but that my pancreas is still working properly.

But she’s calling it metabolic syndrome, the symptoms of which include:

* Fasting hyperglycemia - tyle 2 diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, or insulin resistance

* High blood pressure

* Gaining weight primarily in the abdominal area

* Decreased HDL cholesterol

* Elevated triglycerides

I…do not have most of those. My fasting glucose is well within normal range (typically in the mid 70s), although it’s possible that I’m insulin resistant and it’s taking too much insulin to maintain my normal levels, which I suppose could explain my occasional hypoglycemia. My blood pressure is actually low when I’m calm and elevates to normal range when I’m stressed or upset, and my HDL is really really good. I gain weight fairly evenly over my body; though I certainly do gain in the belly area, I’m not exactly the definition of “apple” shaped. The only definitive symptom I have is the elevated triglycerides. But given the cholesterol readings in conjunction with the astronomical c-reactive protein, there is clearly something going on.

My doctor is putting me on metformin. I’m going to trust her on this for now and see what happens. She assured me that it’s not associated with increased hypoglycemic episodes and I hope she’s right. I know some people have had terrible reactions to it, but I know others who have seen some real improvements without the horrible side effects. She’s starting me on 500 mg extended release; I’m supposed to build up to 1500 mg daily and get my blood work redone in about 3 months.

But right now I’m scared. I feel as though my body is betraying me. As an adult, I’ve always been the outlier in my immediate family for being fat, but I was always more active than my brother, who is naturally very thin (he’s built just like our dad). I feel like I’m too young for this even though I’m 27 and these are all risk factors, not actual diseases. I’m used to being healthy and even though I still am, I think this is running up against my youthful assumptions of invincibility. And I don’t know what to do with that.

(Um, and comments/support are very welcome. Please?)

http://danishmodernlady.tumblr.com

Here's a few snippets of the psychocunt:

"FUCK YOU ISRAEL!" reasoned Miriam Lazewatsky, "That is all"

"I am actually shaking with anger," blogs Miriam Lazewatsky (danishmodernlady @ tumblr), trumpeting her BIPOLAR PERSONALITY DISORDER, "about this shitastic book that was recommended to me by Amazon when I added Health At Every Size to my Kindle wishlist. TW for fat shaming and ridiculous assumptions about why fat people are fat. This PIECE OF FUCKING SHIT BOOK TELLS ME I SHOULD "EAT LESS" and "EXERCISE MORE" I fucking CANNOT. My weight is not a goddamned lifestyle, nor is it a disease. For some people, it might be, but I’m really fucking tired of blanket statements about why fat people are fat." http://danishmodernlady.tumblr.com/post/15061645115/i-am-actually-shaking-with-anger) [mlazewatsky] lazewatsky

Miriam J. Lazewatsky AGAIN shows her financial IRRESPONSIBILITY: "I just almost broke down crying while on the phone with a Citibank representative. Got a letter today that they’ll increase my monthly fee to $20/month that can only be waved with a FIFTEEN THOUSAND dollar per month minimum balance. They switched me to an account with a $10 monthly fee and a $1500 minimum that can be waved with a monthly direct deposit. Better, but not a permanent solution."

"This makes me want to punch someone. Seriously. Fuck you Maxim. Fuck this patriarchal, condescending, patronizing bullshit," RRRAGES hypocritical cunt Miriam Lazewatsky ...who wonders why she can't get a real job.

Greetings,

3 of my friends started talking so much about FA and HAES the past few months. It's fucking annoying to see them shit all over my wife's profession by talking about birth rape and fat shaming and shit. I defriended all of them after there were three fights, one with each, that ended in me calling them dumbasses.

I haven't missed their TTT conversations about Feminista and whatever other shit blogs are out there.

Something tells me, though, that America's financial woes will soon give rise to a moar Darwinian decade. Fatasses (like Jenn Leyva and Margitte Kristjansson? (aka

I mean, I get that the blogger probably considers women's bodies to be colonized by fashion, media, men, patriarchy, etc. I get that she wants to reclaim her own body in some kind of aboriginal Earth mother way. All right. I can get not feeling shame about your weight, even if you are overweight, if you don't think about it at all, or if your weight is status quo for your community/SES cohort.

What I do not understand is those who probably believe that weight is at least partly the product of agency, and feel pride at what is, doubtless, a failing. I mean, often they couch these analyses in language excusing themselves, right? "My body changes without my permission." Though this is true within some tolerances, putting up two bills as a woman is probably almost always within your control. Unless she is one of the few for which this is about ghlerin or some kind of gland, she made a series of small choices, however seductive and easy, to be fat. This seems to me to be a weird basis to be proud; you didn't get fat to make a political statement.

Well, I'm not quite saying this in the right way. What I mean is this: I get it if you don't think fatness is an issue. I get it if you think we have a cult of thinness in this culture, and we probably do and it's probably corrosive to people's attitudes. What I don't get is acting like your fatness actually confers more worth, or being really proud or feeling fat and fabulous or whatever. I read this pride stuff as a thin veneer of defense. I have to think the fat and proud folks hate themselves more than other fat people.

For all my flaming in this thread, I agree with you.

"I read this pride stuff as a thin veneer of defense."

Exactly. And not only is it defensive, it's also denial. They can't even *entertain* the possibility that being very overweight is unhealthy for many people. Sure, there are probably many fatties who are young and relative healthy in that they have no signs of ill health that would show up on a blood test. But it's also well established that weight loss helps lower high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes risk. Oh, and your joints feel better when they're not supporting 300 pounds. Anyone who insists otherwise is kidding themselves.

Your analysis of the problem is less nuanced than most well educated fats'. Sure, on balance, it's healthier to be thin than fat. But assume you spend all your time trying, but failing to lose weight. What then? Does the resulting negative self-image and associated emotional problems make you healthier? Does yo-yo dieting make you healthier? The alternative to most fats is not being thin, happy and healthy - it's being even fatter, depressed and miserable because you can't lose the weight. This is the reality that the weight loss industry isn't telling you about. Therefore, some fats just say fuck it - I'll be fat, but I'll accept who I am, and try to lead a happy, self-loving life despite of it.

I think it works like this:

-I am fat.

-I've tried to change that, failed. Possibly many times.

-Therefore it's more or less outside of my control.

-Therefore I can continue being sad about it, and letting it define me, or I can make the most of it, and at least be happy with it.

-The latter is better. I'll blog about it.

-Look at me! I'm reasonably healthy and productive, if fat. Also: sexy (but I won't post pics).

-Screw you, hungry thins! You can't make me feel bad because I won't let you.

-Other fats, it's time to unite. Sex Party(fats only) at my place, 9PM.

Actually, no, since I don't each much sugar, I don't get insulin spikes and drops that make me feel hungry without reason. I also feel fuller longer since, due to eating a proper amount, my stomach is a proper, small size rather than a stretched basketball of insatiability.

I’m totally healthy. In fact, I have a ton of privilege when it comes to health, and most of it is just luck of the draw. But I’m still pre-dead.

Yes, health decline and death are inevitable. Sure, we can take steps to hinder the progress of aging, but we can’t stop it, internally or externally. Torturing ourselves to look a certain way because we think it means we’ll also feel a certain way is lying to ourselves.

We owe our bodies more than that.

That's a credited observation on how these bloggers will attribute agency to their bellies or bodies or whatever, as a sort of therapeutic mechanism to avoid internalizing any sort of blame.

It does sometimes take a health scare of some sort to inspire people to chance ingrained habits. What's disturbing about this woman (and so many other victims of compulsive behavior) is that they've reconciled themselves not only to their own past choices, but to the serious health consequences that these choices threaten.

Two reasons:

1) They probably believe getting fat is NOT a product of some failure of self control. There are a minority of people who are fat due to some glandular issue. (I knew one dude like this in high school who played mad sports who was super sensitive about it). However, this is like 1% of fat people. These FA people probably believe however that this applies to a majority of fats.

2) They do not accept that there is a biological basis for finding skinny people sexier. They believe our current views on what is sexy are sociocultural, and will trot out an example of some obscure amazonian tribe that liked fat women. By believing this, they don't have to take any steps to trim themselves down, and as a side benefit, also get to feel superior to other people who are prisoners to the sociocultural worldview they were born into.

No, it's not. The rationale behind this is the simple axiom set

-it is not good to be judgmental of non-bad things

-being fat is a non-bad thing

I am hypoglycemic

And I haven’t been managing it well.

I don’t test on a regular basis because I’m highly unlikely to have a hypo become a medical emergency. Instead, I try to eat regularly and get enough protein to keep my blood sugars even. I don’t pay close enough attention to each meal to know what foods exactly work and don’t work, though. I’ve only had an official diagnosis for under a year, though the symptoms have been around for at least five.

The thing is, I’ve been getting hypos several times per week recently, at one point opening a cabinet and standing there blindly staring into it for several minutes before a friend (who is diabetic and recognized why i was acting strangely) nudged me away and poured a glass of soda. The fact that I was having some trouble talking properly probably tipped her off, too.

And guess what’s probably going on as I speak (or type - as the case may be). But I’m too tired to do anything about it. It’s a vicious cycle and I need to learn how to be more vigilant about it. So, uh, yeah. This is a rambling post and I’m not sure it has a point, but I’m open to thoughts and advice, too.

I created a new OkCupid account and have been busily answering match questions and looking through interesting profiles.

A number of the questions pertain to weight. So many people’s preferred body type in a mate is “slim/thin” and so many people say that they would date an “overweight” person, but not someone who is “obese.”

I find it off-putting, but I have no idea if they’re talking about me or not.

How to be a good FA ally

A friend recently posted on twitter asking for information about how to be a good fat ally. Googling hadn’t lead her anywhere and Tumblr is a nightmare for searches when posts haven’t been tagged. Shannon kinda beat me to it, but this is a little different, so I figured it was time to write something up.

1. Basics

Be aware of thin privilege and notice when you are treated differently from your friends who are fat. Yes, thin and average sized people are body policed, but the implications are different. Fat people often face verbal shaming on a daily basis, consistent nagging from doctors about weight, and worries about fitting into places thin people rarely, if ever have to think about, like restaurant booths, airplane seats, and amusement park rides. Even though I’m on the smaller end of fat, I sometimes worry about taking up too much space on the subway, especially when squeezing in between two other people.

2. Health, Weight, & Fitness

First and foremost, health is personal and private. An individual’s health is between that person and their doctor. No one else. Don’t assume that your friends who are fat could lose weight if they just tried harder. Don’t question their food choices. Don’t ask if they’ve heard about the latest fad diet, exercise program, or weight loss pill and stop referring to healthful eating and exercise as weight loss programs. Eating well and being active will make most people healthier, but won’t make most people thinner.

Don’t talk about how you’re “just worried about their health”. You cannot tell whether or not someone is healthy based on their weight or physical appearance. On that note, don’t exclude fat friends from physical excursions because you think they aren’t fit or can’t keep up. That may be true, but it shouldn’t be your call. Many fat people are in good shape and enjoy physical activities. Conversely, stop equating thinness with health. Many thin people have health issues, even ones that have been traditionally associated with fatness, like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

3. Social Stuff

Do not engage in negative body talk around fat friends. In fact, stop it altogether. It’s bad for you, too. But think about it: If a thin woman thinks she’s “fat” (which is code for what? Out of control? Ugly? Lazy? Sloppy?), what does that mean for a woman who actually is fat? Think critically about why fatness is so reviled in western (and increasingly world) culture(s). What is it used as shorthand to represent? How are fat people represented on television and in movies.

Don’t exclude fat friends because you are embarrassed to be seen with them. If you are, you’re not being a good friend. Be aware that many fat people cannot shop in the same clothing stores you can and keep this in mind when making plans to go shopping. This is true even of people who are right on the edge of fat (inbetweenies). When out with others, or even alone, don’t comment about other people’s bodies or clothing choices. You’re giving yourself permission to judge people based on appearance, which reinforces cultural physical ideals.

Don’t assume that everyone finds fat people unattractive or that fat people are desperate for romantic relationships. Don’t treat fat people as non-sexual beings, particularly women, who are prone to being desexualized. At the same time, don’t fetishize fat people, who don’t exist to fulfill your fantasies.

4. And Finally

Educate yourself. Consider reading any or all of these books: The Obesity Myth, Rethinking Thin, Lessons from the Fatosphere, and Health at Every Size. Look carefully at the studies that supposedly show a strong negative connection between health and fatness. Most of those conclusions have been greatly exaggerated and the methodology (i.e. controlling for preexisting conditions, smoking, and regular physical activity) is poor.

Be open minded. Listen to people talk about their personal experiences and respect safe spaces. Understand that if you are not a fat person, sometimes the best thing you can do is listen and observe.

My self-summary

I'm a native Bostonian, but I love being in New York - just don't expect me to ever root for the Yankees. I've lived all over the country, including Los Angeles and Nashville, but came back to the northeast for grad school a few years ago and hope to stay here for a while.

I like hiking but not camping, enjoy lifting weights and doing yoga, and would love to start playing racquetball again. For the past two summers I've attended the Manhattan Polo Classic on Governor's Island, which is a fun excuse to dress up for a day and act fancy.

I really love planetariums, but the fact that the "personality" section deems me "more scientific" than the average straight woman scares me a bit. I was a humanities major. I have a degree in theology for chrissakes! I took basic science courses in high school and college and did reasonably well in them, but I'm no scientific genius. I really hope this isn't based on my knowledge that the sun is bigger than the Earth.

And I'm not the Sonnet. I don't know what they want, but I'm much closer to the Maid of Honor.

I don't actually wear my glasses outside all that often.

What I'm Doing With My Life

I work on media campaigns for an LGBT rights nonprofit. I have a degree in theology and a background in the relationship between religious belief, public opinion, and the politics of gender and sexuality. I love that I've found a job that allows me to really use my background.

I'm really good at

Scrabble. Wanna play?

The first things people usually notice about me

According to a friend, it's my "feisty intelligence," but I think I have pretty striking eyes.

[Great euphemism for "I'm an insipid cunt"]

Favorite books, movies...

I'm a bit of a foodie, but try not to be pretentious about it. If i'm going out to eat, my usual choices are Thai or Vietnamese. Offhand, the only cuisines I'm iffy about are Korean and French.

In terms of books, I loved Brave New World, All Quiet on the Western Front, and My Antonia. I'm a huge fan of Margaret Atwood.

Secretary and Lars and the Real Girl are among my favorite movies. basically, I like quirky and hate horror.

I mostly listen to indie music - The Weepies, The Eels, The Dodos, Anna Ternheim, The Shins, etc. You get the idea. I also grew up around a lot of Simon & Garfunkel and The Beatles, so they have a special place in my heart. Especially the White Album. Uh, and Sister Hazel reminds me of middle school in the best possible way.

If we're doing karaoke, I will probably sing something by Barenaked Ladies. Or Sweet Caroline. Like I said, I'm a native Bostonian.

You Should Message Me If

You're single (sorry, but poly doesn't really work for me); live in Manhattan, Brooklyn, or Queens; are looking for more than a hook up; and like smart, curvy, fun women. Kinky is a big plus, but I'm not looking for a Master or some sort of 24/7 situation. Just someone who likes to experiment and maybe sometimes go to parties or events.

DING!

http://theinbetweenie.tumblr.com/post/4126681038/i-created-a-new-okcupid-account-and-have-been

I created a new OkCupid account and have been busily answering match questions and looking through interesting profiles.

A number of the questions pertain to weight. So many people’s preferred body type in a mate is “slim/thin” and so many people say that they would date an “overweight” person, but not someone who is “obese.”

I find it off-putting, but I have no idea if they’re talking about me or not.

http://inbetweenieavenger.tumblr.com/post/7380323512/the-word-fat-is-reclaimed-by-fat-persons-and

"The word ‘fat’ is reclaimed by fat persons and divested of the negative connotations of ugliness, laziness, stupidity, so on and even the positive stereotypes that take away from a fat person’s humanity. To be a fat-accepting person is to deconstruct and contest the relentless messages that every one of us receives daily about fat people’s universally unhealthy ‘lifestyles’, pseudo-scientific measures of fatness such as the Body Mass Index (BMI), our aesthetic unpleasantness and our lack of discipline in relation to food and our bodies. Fat acceptance allows the person to question the voice in their head that they are unworthy because they are fat and to go for what they want (of course there are other factors but this type of will is still important). It is a multi-faceted social movement which promotes a Health At Every Size (HAES) outlook, wherein regular and enjoyable exercise, size acceptance of one’s own body and the bodies of others, and listening to when one is hungry, full or needs more nourishment are fundamental within one’s limitations such as being diabetic, for example. As a fat person, the HAES outlook can be a struggle but is a way to focus on what my body is like now while engaging in self-care. It is intrinsic to how I move through the world as a person coming into her own."

The diabetic rationalizing fatass denier mourns food she had to THROW AWAY in high school...

http://retroavenger.tumblr.com/post/7423062738/sustainable-food-petition-tell-trader-joes-to-stop

I worked at Trader Joe’s in high school and it’s all true. They throw out anything that’s past its sell-by date (which is very different from an expiration date) as well as cans and boxes that are dented. They wouldn’t even let employees take anything home, though people did sometimes manage to get a few things into their bags without anyone noticing.

http://entre-deux-femmes.tumblr.com/post/7437800152/thinking-about-pride

Thinking about pride

Some of the common criticisms I’ve seen of FA go something like this:

Well, I’ll concede that many people who lose weight regain it, maybe over and over again, so I guess it’s better that fat people accept themselves as they are than hate themselves for being fat. But I don’t get why they have to be proud of it and shove their fatness in my face.

Why are these people so obsessed with their weight? So they’re fat. Why do they have to talk about it so much?

My perspective on pride is that I don’t personally feel the need to express pride in things over which I have little or no control. I was born and raised Jewish; although being Jewish is an indelible part of my identity, it is not a point of pride. It simply is. Similarly, my body is what it is. As much as I’ve tried in the past to change it, I have always ended up somewhere between “not thin” and fat. I’m not proud of being fat or not fat, nor am I ashamed if it.

I think pride can be an important thing, particularly for oppressed groups, because it reaffirms the inherent worth of a group of people perceived to be outside the cultural norm. But I also go through life with a lot of privilege. I’m white (or pass as white, depending on who you talk to), I was raised upper middle class, I had access to higher education, I’m straight. The list could go on, but my point is that I have enough privilege (sometimes flat out privilege and sometimes passing privilege) that pride can feel appropriative.

But I write about fatness because the bias is still there and it seems to be getting worse. Even though I may not be affected as directly as other people doesn’t mean I don’t feel the effects of a culture that is so biased towards a level of thinness that is unattainable for large portions of the population. I’m not obsessed with my weight, though I am aware of it. (I’m well aware that, even though weight alone may not be an indicator of health, sudden changes in weight can be cause for concern. That’s why I talked to my doctor when I noticed a continuing change.) I write about weight and fatness and self acceptance because visibility is important, because stigma is dangerous, and because people are more than just statistics. They have value as individuals, regardless of weight, and it seems too easy for that to be forgotten.

Must really SUCK to be a fatass denial blogger...look at the RAGE when someone tells Meems [Miriam Lazewatsky] what a moron she is:

http://akatheinbetweenie.tumblr.com

http://akatheinbetweenie.tumblr.com/post/8073523618/trigger-fat-open-discussion-trigger-words-catch

Grow the fuck up.

I never told you you couldn’t lose weight.

I never told you what to do with your own body.

HAES is, in fact a pretty simple concept, and it does not, according to the people who came up with the concept, include weight control. You don’t get to pick out one sentence and say “I’m honoring my body by losing weight, so I’m doing HAES.” You don’t like it? Take it up with them. Don’t whine to me about how I’m annoying you by defining a concept that has been researched and studied by nutrition and health professionals.

You want to lose weight? Go right ahead. It’s just not HAES.

You know, I get that you’ve had issues with people you’ve encountered in FA since deciding to lose weight. And apparently you’ve projected that bitterness onto every person who ascribes to FA. You and I have never interacted before tonight. My original post wasn’t even directed at you and you come out with that shit about eating your vagina? Yeah, and it bears repeating.

Grow the fuck up.

Peech, you can fuck right off with your condescending bullshit. If you have an issue with what HAES entails, take it up with Linda Bacon. HAES does not advocate purposeful weight loss or weight control through diet and exercise. If you’re purposefully losing weight, you are not following HAES. It’s that simple. I’m not telling you that you can’t choose to lose weight (nor is Sibz from what I can tell), but doing so is outside the realm of HAES.

Also, get your terms straight. Trying to dismiss what I quoted from Linda Bacon’s website as copy pasta doesn’t actually make it copy pasta. Copy pasta refers to something posted repeatedly with the intention of annoying or trolling people.

By the way, my name is Miriam Lazewatsky. It says so in my about me section. If you’re going to be so crass as to tell me to “eat [your] entire vagina” at least use my name.

A Conversation

Last time I saw my doctor (for an annual physical) we talked about the fact that I don’t particularly like vegetables. I don’t dislike them, but eating vegetables has always, necessarily, been a conscious choice for me. I think it will always have to be a conscious choice. But my doctor, because she’s a doctor, gave me a number of “pointers” on how to make them more appealing. She went through herbs and spices and even oil or butter. Then she looked down at my chart again…

“Oh…or you could just use salt. No need to worry about your blood pressure.”

Sweet. I love salt.

http://fatandtheivy.tumblr.com/post/10982799726/save-half-for-later

I recently received an email about an internship with the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Department of Health Evidence and Policy. It reads:

Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Department of Health Evidence and Policy

October 2011 to May 2012; 2 days (minimum of 10 total hours) a week

Internship Description: Looking for motivated self - starter to assist the Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center, housed in the Department of Health Evidence and Policy at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention REACH US Program, on multiple community-based projects. Interns will work with project staff to:

* Implement the Communities IMPACT Diabetes Center and East Harlem Diabetes Center of Excellence’s (NYS Department of Health funded) “Save Half for Later” campaign, which aims to help customers eat a healthy portion of food when dining out. This would include promoting the campaign, engaging restaurants to participate, training and monitoring restaurant staff on campaign implementation and helping to evaluate the campaign’s success. […]

[Emphasis mine.]

Let me get this straight. Let’s take some thin, wealthy, white people put them in Harlem and have them convince some fat, poor, Black people that their health is in danger because they are eating a full meal at a restaurant. That’s not at all a myopic understanding of health, fat, race, gender, class, and consumption.

Oh wait. It is.

This program completely ignores the idea of consumption. Paul Campos writes that fear of fat comes from a fear of over consumption and lethargy stemming from the conveniences of modern life. Fat is the physical manifestation of too much consumption and not enough labor. This fear stems from the idea that we have created a world that is not strenuous enough for ourselves. We have created something that is too easy, and we feel guilty.

But instead of dealing with our own concerns about modernity, we often take the fat shame and blame game to others. It’s poor people of color who aren’t doing enough. They aren’t economically productive. They don’t have have the time or money for a gym membership, so they’re also not exercising enough. But that’s such a fucked up understanding of the reality of the situation at hand. Poor, Black people do not need to be shamed about their bodies with the idea consumption by rich, white people. First, it’s ineffective. Diets don’t work. And telling people that they should be ashamed of their bodies also doesn’t make people thin. Trust me— I wouldn’t be Fat and the Ivy if that were the case. More broadly, this myopic approach to fat, health, and consumption eliminates the need for those with the power and privilege to look at their own positions and actions. It eliminates the need for those who can change the systems that disadvantage poor people and actually cause poor health outcomes to look at the systems that are upholding and creating. The problem with the “Save Half for Later” campaign is that it does not address these powerful notions we have about fat, gender, race, and class. There’s an assumption that poor people are fat because they are too lazy and dumb to know better. If only someone would buy them a copy of South Beach Diet or enroll them in Jenny Craig or teach them how much to eat at Weight Watchers! The Fat Nutritionist has addressed this before. There is a heirarchy of food needs, and first we worry about enough food, then acceptable food, then reliable access to food etc. Poor people are still worrying about the basics of enough food and acceptable food. ”You want people to eat better? Give them enough money, a place for cooking and storage, and access to a decent variety of food. Then you can worry about the finer points of nutrition.”

OH, LOOK...now she's blogging from

atheologist tumblr com

Finished the last of the cookie and the donut from this morning. Good food decisions.

Burn more calories than you eat = weight loss. Generally slow and somewhat difficult to maintain, but nobody has a body that somehow overcomes a calorie deficit.

Not losing weight or putting it back on has everything to do with eating too much and not exercising...though I guess it's easier to say you're fat for reasons outside of your control.
