connections and networking matter a ton in i-banking, bro.
i know one kid who went to indiana university, he got a job at Goldman Sachs I-banking.
granted, he networked his ass off and destroyed all the interviews he got.

your chance of switching over to finance from law largely depends on what firm you are working at.
if your firm is a heavy M&A hitter that deals with clients from i-banks, and if you have experience in structuring deals for M&A or capital markets, you have a shot.
if you work in shitlaw and work on garbage crap like personal injury, etc, you can fuck off from finance.

most lawyers who switch over to i-banking come from corporate, not litigation.
also, you basically need to be in NYC BigLaw to make the switch. how lawyers switch over to NYC I-banking is via networking through their clients. If you work in NYC Biglaw in corporate M&A, you work with bankers and can leverage that connection and your corporate experience to switch over.
However, I heard that even if you are at NYC BigLaw, it's really hard to switch over to I-banking.
In your case, sorry, unless you go attend a top MBA program, I don't think you have any shot at getting an I-banking gig.

I am no expert on MBA admissions, but I would guess you won't make the cut at the top players like HBS, Wharton, or Stanford.
If you do get 790 GMAT and have work experience that proves that you have 'leadership skills', maybe you can get into lower top schools like Duke, Cornell, or UCLA.
However, getting an I-banking associate job out of an MBA ranked lower than M7 (top 7 schools), especially in this economy and considering the fact that you didn't have pre-MBA finance experience, is going to be very difficult.
