Abstract
This paper examines how Muslim women and men frame their strategies for gender justice, to what extent their work can be framed from feminist perspectives, if at all, as well as how these feminist perspectives intersect with Islamic traditions of reformist Islam. The paper does this by looking at the work of four Muslim scholars, namely Riffat Hassan, Amina Wadud, Ziba Mir-Hosseini and Syafiq Hasyim.
Hassan’s and Wadud’s work focus on Qur’anic exegesis from a woman’s perspective while Mir-Hosseini and Syafiq Hasyim takes on Muslim jurisprudential interpretations, exploring the intersections between religion, culture and law that legitimate subordination of women.
The paper seeks to answer at the following questions: - How is gender justice perceived by Muslim scholars? How are the arguments about gender justice framed? How are their arguments framed within the Islamic context? Can feminist ideas be discerned in these scholars’ pursuit for gender justice?
