I bet a lot of them make a good living despite what people say.

a junior interned at a decent small firm this semester. she told me that there are a lot of sure-win cases on which the associates need not spend much time (mostly spending a few days writing briefs and appearing in courts). not big cases but contingency cases that the firm will very likely win. if they win, they will get 1/3 and $200,000

200,000 is very little money but there are many cases!

given that it is a very small firm and there are numerous cases of this nature, it would seem that the associates make a good (though not luxurious) living. and they do.

Massive attrition. You see the few people still around 20 years later. Most are likely not even practicing law.

but it does not specialize in a particular type of law, like IP.

the starting pay may not be high but the people, as I heard, have pretty good credentials and are decent (not difficult/crazy to work with)

why?

I am just reporting.

those are not slip and fall personal injury cases but not overly complex....

if a firm has numerous such cases the associates have it pretty good.

man you realize for contingency firms the wins have to cover all the bad? that is, that easy settlement case has to cover any number of cases you blew 100k on expert witnesses and then lost at jury trial, or wasted filing fees and a ton of attorney time on discovery and some expert fees and then lost at MSJ, etc. etc. etc.

I worked for a 10 man firm first summer in a small city in flyover country. They were doing pretty well. If I had to guess, they probably averaged 300k per partner doing mostly transactional work with some commercial litigation mixed in.

To be fair, 8 of them had degrees from T25 law schools (2 from Harvard).

Seems like these types of firms are doing it right because their hours weren't that bad and they had a pretty baller lifestyle. Yet, I doubt that most firms are like this.

This can often be a great gig. The partners will clear 200-500k in a low COL city and will make tons of business contacts, so they can get their hands into different projects and end up fairly well-off. I mean, not Zuckerberg well-off, but a net worth in the $5-10m range. That's a sweet deal.

I remember talking to the partners when they took me out. They asked me what I thought about investing 1M in real estate or putting it into diversified portfolios. None of them lived extravagant lifestyles, but probably had a home worth 400-500k (goes far in these kinds of cities), drove a BMW / AUDI / LEXUS, and belonged to the local country club.

They pretty much represented all of the small municipalities in the

area. They also had a large number of medium sized businesses (auto dealerships, statewide chains, etc). The most interesting work I saw them do was related to industrial waste and environmental damage. One of their clients was having problems building storage because a local municipality was being a dick.

If you can stand being bored to death in a city with no culture it's pretty boss.
