India will be the next great world power, not China.

No
Corruption & Mismanagement on mass scales is what holds them back
Also, obviously, population overgrowth

But what comes out from the recent data is the extent of decline in calorie intake during 2005-10, the highest in any five-year period. Per capita calorie intake in rural areas was 2,266 in 1972-73, 2,149 in 1999-2000, 2,047 in 2004-05 and 1,929 in 2009-10 on comparable basis. Calorie intake in urban areas was 2,107 in 1972-73, 2,156 in 1999-2000, 2,020 in 2004-05 and 1,908 in 2009-10. That is, while calorie intake declined by 117 calories per capita between 1972-73 and 1999-2000 in rural areas, it fell by 220 calories per capita in the last 10 years.
It is now sufficiently clear that despite improved incomes and increased production, not only per capita availability but also intake of most food items declined during the last decade. Nor is there any reason to take solace in the fact that this decline is occurring only in case of cereals and pulses and is a sign of diet diversification because of increasing prosperity. Whatever may be the answer to this puzzle, the fact remains that issues of food and hunger do remain a challenge for the Indian economy. This has implications for the biggest challenge facing the country: that of the severe malnutrition which remains stubbornly resistant to any change.

capital has far greater return in India than it does in China, this seems to indicate their long term growth will be more stable.
thing is China is already near super power status, they're what maybe 10 years away from equaling the united states economically? if not less?

Lived in India a few years.
Biggest things holding India back are corruption and general laziness of the people.

They haven't had their first real, large scale war yet.
As their global influence becomes stronger, it's going to be inevitable that they'll have to invest in large scale military infrastructure. All superpowers do.
The fact is that you never know what a country can do until after the fight and win/lose a war.

there are less full blacks there than in the US (only 13 million)
lots of mulattoes, sure
i'd take my chances with 83 million Brazilian mulattoes over 252 million South Indians.

Some of its corporations will become globally competitive, but other than that Indians don't really care to get involved with the rest of the world's problems. Non-alignment is still popular among the intelligentsia and will remain so as long as there are major internal issues that take precedence (i.e., poverty, Kashmir, Pakistan, Maoist rebellions). Plus India has never perceived itself as a world power in a political sense - the Guptas and Mughals, though they traded with the West, were never very outward looking like the Europeans. Their status resides in being more of a major cultural power.
This is different from China, which has always seen itself as preeminent both politically and culturally, and views its recent success as a restoration to a rightful world order. China will be the greater power because they want it more.

Latin America and Africa was an imperative of Cold War politics. With India, there's no ideology to fight for, and no great threat from any outside power for them to bother with this type of stuff. There's enough dirt-cheap labor within India if they need people to pick bananas or whatever.
By cultural I mean that Indians take pride in being at the crossroads of three or four major world religions, or their music, history, architecture, etc. They want to be recognized as having a place alongside China, US, and the major European powers, but that doesn't translate into a desire to export their equivalent of blue jeans and rock n'roll. At most, their cultural expansion via Bollywood or cricket is only for the diaspora.
