Total debt should be equal to or less than expected first year salary.
Oversimplified and overused, and yet still a pretty decent rule of thumb.
Also discount by the reasonable odds of landing said job. Law school and BIGLAW makes this so easy since you know what the 1st year salary is.
If you go to a school that places 50% in BIGLAW/ top clerkship/ big gov - I'd say your debt should not exceed 80k.
Very simple cost/benefit analysis. Law school is still a very good bet for those that can get good scholarships to T14 schools.
But idiots paying full freight basically anywhere these days deserve their fate.

If you don't have a plan though you are right its hard to get 1L. But for the equations people can pull in 25g for second year summer that needs to be equated into things for a school like boalt.
