protip: they expect you to take forever and not have a fucking clue. try to do it well, MAKE SURE it is done on time and spelling error / typo free, and ask a lot of questions when you first get the assignment to make sure you really understand what they're looking for (so you don't go spinning you wheels for 3 days answering a question that wasn't asked). oh and be enthusiastic, and try to hang out with some of the people you get work from, even if it's just lunch. if you do all that you'll be fine.

it's far more important you do good work and get good reviews of that work than to churn out assignments. none of the shit summers do is important or billable. it's much worse to get a ding on an assignment that you've done than to have done a few less assignments total than your peers.

I had a somewhat similar summer at a much less secure firm and still easily got an offer because people liked me and they saw that I had a good attitude.

OP, some more advice: make sure you get feedback every time you turn an assignment in. plus, you can ask for more work from that same person in the same follow-up email:

"I was just following up on X that I sent over a couple days ago. Is there any additional research that's needed, or anything else I can help out with? Also, I would really appreciate it if you could give me any feedback you have."

i would read that as people are busy. ask for feedback, don't be a pussy. last thing you want is a surprise during your exit interview. if you're doing something wrong, you definitely want to know now so you can fix it, and address the issue with whoever you did the work for that you did badly on, so they say something in the review like "he had an issue with attention to detail on the first assignment, but recognized his error and showed initiative by following up with me, and the subsequent assignments he completed were done well." and not something like "he had an issue with attention to detail on this assignment, and seemed unenthusiastic about the work overall." (taken from your failure to follow up with an email afterward)

also, there's no such thing as an instant no-offer.

TBF I think I had a very slow start to the program because I just figured 100% offer rate is 100% offer rate. So I think I started slower in the sense my first assignment took me way longer than it should and I haven't gotten in my groove.

This happened to me two summers ago. First assignment was a nightmare and I never completely recovered to the pace of finishing assignments everyone else was on. Just show that your work product is decent and you know how to communicate with superiors. If you do that, you get an offer. Firms know that the summers who are relative slowpokes are going to be a lot more efficient after a few months as a real associate, and no one is expecting much efficiency out of a summer.

you won't get a cold offer, you'll get a normal offer.

just keep doing your assingments. if people can tell you're putting in a good-faith effort you're fine. if you're not even trying, you'll still get an offer but nobody will want to work with you when you get back. the stories that get passed around are about the summers who thumbed their nose at us. biglaw is very passive-aggressive. we'll write you a good review and give you your offer, but we'll never work with you when you get back.
