With unrealistic expectations where every deal is a crazy fire drill? I would take a $75k a year pay cut just for that.

midlaw has its own set of problems. it fucking sucks how cheap the clients can be. so fucking annoying to have them call every month bitching about a few padded hours. and partners often still turn shit into fire drills even if the clients themselves aren't as demanding

Midlaw problems:

1) Rate-sensitive clients

2) Less sophisticated clients want more contact and "hand-holding"

3) As an associate it's difficult to rise up and become a partner unless you can develop business for the firm. In biglaw there are ways to stay on without having to be your own rainmaker.

So it looks more and more likely that I might do this.

Sounds like people are bill about 1800 at this firm realistically, maybe a little more. I am surely going to keep billing 2200-2300 at my current biglaw firm, and that assumes that I have to reject work all of the time.

It would be a 75k pay cut on base salary, but IF I billed the same hours as my current firm (which I wouldn't plan on doing), I would have a guaranteed bonus (assuming I stayed) that would more than make up for it.

Any more thoughts.

I think you also have a subset within MidLaw that consists of boutique law. I work at a boutique lawfirm that pays (midlaw-ish wages--about $110-125), and the clients here are not stupid or too cost sensitive. Most of the partners here are former BigLaw partners, and they work with clients similar to the ones that I worked with in BigLaw. I guess the benefit is that overall my billing rate is lower than BigLaw, but the associates (former Biglaw associates) are familiar enough with the practice area that there is no "training period." The work is not nearly as sophisticated, but who is really in law because they want to work on sophisticated matters? On an hourly basis, I probably make as much as I did in BigLaw.

yeah, this is "boutique". All of the lawyers have at least 6 years of experience, starting pay is like $180k base and everyone has a former biglaw/top school pedigree.

I don't need the training. I have been billing 2200+ hours for 7 years. I am well trained.

And yes, billing rates are about 30% lower than biglaw....which should make it easier to get clients.

yeah, this is my concern, although in my practice area we wouldn't be negotiating copier leases or anything. we are kind of a necessary part of the process...but yes I do worry most about tightwad clients that make billing 1800 hours seem like 2100.

sounds good for a law gig if you only have to bill 1800 but why not just go in-house and not bill ever again while getting paid about high-100s at your level and low-mid $200k with bonus?

the billing and the service-oriented nature of law firm work is annoying as hell.

Um, those type of inhouse jobs are not that easy to find, and if you do find them, you are often competing with lots of junior biglaw partners that want out...and the majority of the ones I am aware of that pay that much usually involve similar hours.

I agree, but I think I have maxed out on biglaw and can't wait anymore for the perfect 9-5 inhouse job.

But in any instance, what do you think senior associates are doing....just delegating to juniors from the bberry? Seniors are the biggest workhourses/moneymakers in the firm. My life was much better when I was an idiot junior/midlevel with no responsibility.

Junior partners get to turn down shit cases they don't want to work. Senior associates can't turn down shit. That's pretty much the only distinction.

yeah, what makes being a senior associate the worst (especially a younger senior associate) is that you are expected to lead deals, but all you have are a bunch of incompetent juniors and lower midlevels to help you. Most of the time it is easier just to do it myself.

At least junior partners have me, who knows what they are doing, to handle the deal.
