so, is UMLS > Columbia dental? I can see that dentistry isn't all that hot, but how do you compare it with law?

well, i think the expected value of the degrees favors Michigan: still putting lots of people in biglaw which, despite some evidence to the contrary the last four years, still puts the vast majority of its alumni on a career track to earn at least low six figures for life and many make more. like i said above, i think there is going to be a lot of downward pressure on dentist's earnings, although i'm not trying to MFE about where dental, medical or legal professions are headed in general.
but moreover it just seems like being a dentist would suck. i know the mating cry on this bort now is whining about how much law sucks and saying it's a miserable profession, but i really like being a lawyer. non-specialist dentists seem to have a very limited menu of repetitive procedures that they do, that can't be all that challenging on a daily basis (though this is nothing more than a hunch on my part). plus dentists absolutely do live in the shadow of doctors. i mean, in some sense, Don't We All. but dentists took all the same classes in college and most of them only "discovered" their love of dentistry after being found wanting, either in the classroom or on the MCAT. i went through like 70 or 80% of the pre-med classes and they're not *that* hard. more is asked of you than some libarts classes (that ask almost nothing), but it's not that bad. people on xo who think dentists are geniuses just because they *took* biology and physics (and came away with a gpa ~3.3 or 3.4 in many cases) have never taken any pre-med classes and just worship "dat STEM" because it's the new trolling fad.

Are you aware that an average "general" dentist earns 210K/year working 35 hrs/week? What sort of $$$ and hours do you think an average UMLS grad will have? And unlike MDs, there is no need for residency training. Just 4 years and that's it.

This is a question that is always asked on SDN, "What is the average salary for <insert specialty here>". The most accurate source (in my opinion) for salary info is the ADA Practice Income Survey. Places like salary.com use stats from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which only has salary info on people who are EMPLOYED (this is only about 10-15% of dentists), therefore it is inaccurate. The ADA's survey gives a more accurate depiction of what dentists and their respective specialties could be expected to make 5+ years out of dental school.
DISCLAIMER: Please do not respond with the typical "people shouldn't do dentistry for the money" crap. I'm not posting this info in order to start a debate about what the "proper" reasons are to get into dentistry. These are merely statistics that answer a question that MANY predents ultimately have.
Practice Net Income:
General Practice Dentists: $233,200
Periodontists: $279,540
Orthodontists: $290,200
Pediatric Dentists: $346,070
Endodontists: $366,340
OMFS: $516,260

at least, according to the ADA stats, dentistry seems to pwn law hard. And this stat isn't even for Columbia dental grads where most people specialize.
So how does UMLS pwn Columbia dental?

Are you aware that lawyers work about twice as many hours as dentists? Most dentists don't even work on Fridays.
HLS/UVA grads with 10-15 years out of school making the same money as a GENERAL dentist, working twice as many hours. Wow law really does suck.

Dentistry at Columbia.
You won't be able to accomplish any deed of consequence coming out of either school; you'll only be able to make money, and you might as well do so in the way that's least risky and most rewarding.
