Only because I like where I am now and while I work more than most in midlaw, it's manageable and my so so salary will probably be made up for by a double the market bonus (like last year).

I got an offer from a V-20 in NYC but I dont regret going back. The biglaw firm in LA I got an offer for had compressed salaries and would have docked me a seniority year, so I would not be making that much more there anyway.

In the end, I potentially have a long term future at this firm, whereas I dont think I would have one in biglaw. At my level of seniority thats the best I can hope for other than some non existent sweet in house gig.

cool. thanks...yeah I have given up on waiting around for the mythical $200k+ 9-6 inhouse gig, so I feel like boutique/midlaw is the second best option.

I just am very apprehensive. I am definitely taking a major pay cut with the agreement in my employment contract that it would be made up with by bonus if I billed similar hours to biglaw.

Biggest concerns are 1. billing hours is a lot harder because deals are smaller and clients nitpick your hours so much more, 2. although I won't have crazy ibank clients to the same extent, clients will be crazier in different ways, 3. I will miss the prestige and "excitement" of the crazy huge deals....

On the bright side, I actually think at least a couple of my smaller clients will follow me....

1) is a real concern. no more 12 hour block billing. It is unusual for me to bill 6 hours to a single client in a day. I do bill to 6-8 clients a day on average though.

2) They aren't crazier (except for cheap). They are less sophisticated and require more hand holding. they are less insanely anal and demanding of time which is nice. they arent working sunday morning and they dont expect you to be either.

3) When you dont have to work nights and weekends you stop missing this pretty quick.

I am still curious about the billed/collected thing.

for 1, 6 hours would be fine....to meet the quota at this place I won't need to bill more than 7 hours a day. I just worry it is a lot harder....but f it.

for 2, I don't think I mind hand holding. makes me feel smart. less insanely anal and demanding....and not wanting you to waste their money being insanely anal sounds great.

for 3, that sounds awesome. I have worked every weekend and 80% of nights for two months straight.

They said it is what I bill, not what they bill to the client or collect. It isn't that huge a risk for them....even with a shitty 80% realization rate, they are still making good money on my marginal hours...and since all the attorneys are senior, they probably aren't cutting bills as much...

She said that she would be incredibly angry at me if I didn't take it. Frankly, neither of us are that into stuff after a certain point, so the extra time is much more important. We will still make like $300k together or more after bonuses and stuff...I can't spend my life trying to chase just a little more money for a lot more miserable.
