I smoke pot on the weekends, otherwise nothing. I always figured I would have lots of access to coke and other stimulants at a law firm, but I never come across it

Yeah, non-equity partners are generally just senior associates with better branding.

I inherited a few clients, and then I made friends with partners in the private equity group, and they refer their clients' portfolio companies to me for IP work.

Yeah, I have like a $300k book, if I expand it to $600+ I suspect I will make equity, althought the lower end equity partners here probably make less than i do as a non-equity when you factor in havign to pay more for your own benefits.

It happens sometimes, but it would be tough to get back into it. Unless, the work they did during their time away from biglaw could generate business. Like if you went to work at fund that would throw you legal work or something. Or if the thing you did had some kind of prestige associated with it, like an exclusive government job.

It's obvious you're not really an IP Partner (probably not even a BIGLAW associate) but I'll play along.

Do you fear other firms poaching your good associates? I hear that most patent associates are getting upwards of 3 recruiter calls a day.

Not really. People come and go, but since compensation is roughly the same across the market, most people don't jump unless they are having some kind of issue with the people they are doing work for. We actually have way more trouble retaining IP staff, assistants and paralegals.
