Date: June 30th, 2012 7:10 AM Maybe for the NE, but Brown and Cornell <<<< Columbia in California and the rest of the West for sure. In fact, at least among Asians and rich whites in the Bay Area and LA, I'd say Penn is at least even with Cornell and probably more prestigious lately.
Dartmouth >>> Cornell for California as well. Cornell does not have the name recognition in the West that it does in Upper Midwest and NE.
As far as the non-Pacific Coast West -- there's HYP, and then there's Ivy. Columbia is "IVY" + "NYC". In fact, in some places there's "Harvard" and then "school back east".
For Asians, NYU is oddly prestigious. But still, on the whole, not really a name brand in most of the West.
