serious q bros
I love my group and the people I work with, but no one is getting put up for partner, even people who were "promised" it (yes, I know, a biglaw partner's promise is worth shit).
tons of lateral options out there

which one of my pumo friends is this?
the merger was a mixed blessing, enhanced prestige but precluded some other interesting options I had in the fire
firm life is cancerous, but the $ if you make equity partner is key, as are the lateral options in my practice area for partners

i was in your situation and went SOUTHERNLAW. best decision i ever made. of course, i don't really care about staying at a law firm so if i lose my job here cost of living is so low and the tax/labor law environment so favorable that i have some flexibility to do something more entrepreneurial.

raising kids in NYC is impressive. wanting to start a family is one of the major reasons we decided to go chill in the south.

At your stage, you can (i) look for an in-house job (best bet if you don't want to become a professional salesman for legal services), (ii) lateral somewhere more prestigious (good because nobody will question the move, and if you're good you might make partner there), or (iii) lateral somewhere shittier in the hopes that it'll be easier to make partner.
I think (iii) is generally the worst option at year four - it's hard to defend the move without people assuming you got pushed out of your existing place, and there's no guarantee you'll make partner at the new place. You're too far away from partnership for that to be a really compelling reason for moving. If you are going to go somewhere shittier, do it later in exchange for being made partner immediately or with an explicit promise of making it after a 2-year look.
